Playoff Hockey 2001

Ahh playoff time had finally come. Let us rejoice!
Tonight unforantly The Edmonton Oilers lost to Dallas 2-1 in OT. But what a hell of a game.
Anyone eles out there watch hockey. Or am I the only Canuck addicted hockey fanatic?

I was quite the NHL fan when I lived in Minnesota. My house was only about 15 minutes from the Met Center, home of the NorthStars. The last year I lived in Bloomington, the Stars went to the finals as underdogs before being swept by the F***ing Penguins. Not long after, Norm"FuckHead" Green ran away to Dallas and took the team with him.

Tailgating before the game and the dynamics in the arena are awesome. I have a hard time watching hockey on TV (and they dont show NHL over here anyway), but if I lived in a town witha team, I would go often. Hockey rules.

Minor League Hockey is pretty damn cool. For my 21st birthday we got 10 tickets to the home opener of the the new arena for the Spokane Chiefs, who played local rival Tri-CIties. The Chiefs won handily. It was perhaps the best hockey I've ever seen.

I have never been a big hockey fan, don't follow the sport (though I follow no sports), but I do enjoy immensly watching games. When I lived in Upstate NY I got to see quite a few games. Always a good time.

Then I moved to Kansas.

About, oh I dunno, 4 or 5 years ago, they got a minor minor leauge team set up there. The Topeka Scarecrows. It was a pretty big deal to Topekans. Then, during the opening game, first game for the brand spanking new team, packed house, after a single period it occured to everybody in attendence that the team absolutly sucked.

They still do suck, mind you, I mean like BAD, but I will say this. They are a joy to watch. Why? They have a great strategy. They know they can't handle the puck well, aren't great skaters, can't score for shit. But they are all really big mean guys with little or no teeth.

So what they do is when they get the puck, wherever they may be on the ice, they fire it down towards the corner of the other team's side. Then they practically sprint down to that end and knock the shit out of whatever unlucky fuck on the other team got a hold of the puck. Also, anybody who steals the puck from you, if you can catch them, punch them in the face as many times as possible. And, the best way to score is grab hold of the puck and then try to barrel past the goalie and get your physical person inside the net, at which point you drop the puck and claim a goal for yourself no matter what the fucking officials try and tell you.

They never win their games, mind you, but nothing like downing a shitload of beers and watching them try.
