pornographic film dealers were publicly whipped

Teheran (dpa) - Some 20 pornographic film dealers were publicly whipped Tuesday in Teheran, the official news agency IRNA reported.

The dealers had been convicted in court for distribution of what IRNA called obscene CDs and video tapes. They were whipped in downtown Teheran.

According to a parliamentary bill passed in 1993, distributors of ``obscene video films'' (pornography) will in the first instance be sentenced to one to three year imprisonment and payment of 100 million rials (12,500 dollars).

Should they be convicted a second time, the prison term will be increased to two to five years and payment will also rise to 200 million rials (25,000 dollars).

In case of a third conviction, they will receive the death sentence.

Distributors of ordinary Western video films, which are also illegal, will be sentenced to jail terms of between three and four months plus payment of a cash fine amounting to 1 to 10 million rials (125 to 1,250 dollars
