does it really matter that he may be gay?
around 6 months to a year ago (i forget the exact date) a Sunday tabloid newspaper here in the UK was set to publish a front page world exclusive.
They planned to 'out' a high profile english football star, telling the world that he was gay.
The story never run. There was no explanation or follow up. The story just disappeared. Maybe lawyers intervened or they were paid not print the story. Maybe it was a complete fabrication.
Now at the time, I suspected who it was. Still, I didn’t care. Why should I? A players personal life is his own business.
I know someone who spoke to a lady (around 2 weeks ago)who works at the english football association and she mentioned one extremely high profile england international and causally said he was gay. This particular player is the same player that the tabloid were planning to tell the world about.
Ever since the story failed to break, I have always heard his name being linked to it.
My question is (and this is aimed at America) what is the medias perception of a sportsman who is revealed as being gay? How is that sportsman then treated in his respected sport? How homophobic is, for example baseball or american football?
Over here in the UK, if this player is eventually outed – his career could be made very difficult and uncomfortable by the media (because they just love to meddle in peoples personal lives) and by probably most football fans as well. its happened in the past, and it may yet (sadly) happen again.

which player? my hunch is Michael Owen(cos you never hear about him and girlfriends), although their were digs at Greame Le Saux but he is married with children so it couldnt be him.
it should not make a difference in my opinion, but this question isnt directed at me....

i'm hard-pressed to even name three gay high-profile athletes. the only two that spring to mind are greg lougainis and martina navritalova. i don't think it really made a difference to their careers, at least as far as the actual sport part of it goes. i'm sure they got more media attention because of it.
i think things would be different if it were a baseball or football (real football, not that roundball action) star. If alex rodriguez were to come out of the closet, it would be easy to predict the response.
I wonder what the fan response would be towards a gay NASCAR driver.

the thing is people associate being gay with gender crossing so gay guys=feminine and gay girls=masculine. its percieved that men that partake in aggressive contact sports such as rugby, football(both types) cannot be as good as straight players which is utter bollocks. for women it is sometimes an advantage, both Martina Navratalova and Billie Jean King were awesome female tennis players winning a lot of grand slam tournaments.
Men on the other hand are percieved as camp and lesser men. The very fact that the term gay can be used as an insult is proof that to be gay is to be a lesser mortal.
to say something is 'so gay' is to insinuate its crap, wussy, not masculine.
its all a case of gender, but ell me what would you (anyone) describe as masculine in this day and age? who would you say is the most masculine film star? a girls answer to this would be particulary interesting to read, because it would give an insight o what they believe men should be like?
i love debates like this.
