Post A truly wonderful invention

What other great inventions of the last ten years do you think are the groundbreaking ones?

The Clockwork Radio

Trevor Baylis, its inventor had a flash of inspiration while working with an AIDS programme in Africa. Clockwork radios are now being produced by BayGen in South Africa in a factory which is providing employment opportunities for handicapped people. In Eritrea, one of the poorest countries in Africa, the radios are being supplied by the UK's Department for International Development (DFID) to the Eritrean Ministry for Education for an innovative mass education aid project. But the radio is not just suited to countries where electricity supplies are scarce, BayGen is successfully selling radios at commercial prices in the UK and Europe. There are environmental benefits too, batteries once used are almost impossible to recycle. They become a poisonous piece of detritus which is globally the largest source of mercury pollutant.

Bayliss is currently working on a clockwork laptop.

Wind-up radios (and flash-lights and other low power items) have been on the market for years here. Why is this kind of crap news to you? I would've thought somebody as concerned about the environment as you would have the shit all over his house and give it as gifts to everybody he knew.

this is not so much new news, I agree. But this radio was the first one of its kind in the world.

as too was this bagless vacuum cleaner from Dyson. A design the Hoover turned down for years and then when Dyson made it himself they started to make one exactly the same and got sued. Sour grapes from big corporations with poorer products is soo funny.

I don't get this. The radio is an extermely environmentally freidnly piece of machinery. Why would I 'shit all over his house'.

Also, being environmentally friednly is not a bad thing. Better than being a child killer like yourself with that polluting 20years plus car you drive.

Yes I called you a child killer.

That clockwork diagram reminds me of an idea for a bicycle I came up with some 20 years ago... a 3 state clutch either charges, engages or bypasses a series of spring steel windings which store the kinetic energy, so you can collect the power in a downhill slope and use it later on an uphill one.
Has anyone gone and invented that yet?
