toshiba progressive cinema dvd vcr combo

I have a toshiba progressive cinema dvd/vcr combo. My dvds freeze up and won't play altogether.. or sometimes they will lag.. then play.. then lag.. which gets to be very annoying.
Any ideas?

the only time i've had that problem with a dvd player is with burned dvds
