-- What Cinematic Endeavor Did You Just Revel In? (http://www.asylumnation.com/asylum/showthread.php?threadid=56104)
What Movie Did You Just Watch?
I let the old thread drop.
I'm sick of it infecting this forum.
Zonad
Christ, I don't know whether to think this movie is sheer genius social commentary or the most stupid thing I've ever seen.
Escaped convict convinces an entire Irish town he's a space alien.
Eats their food, drinks their liquor and screws their women and they love him for it.
Damn, Avert won the other thread. Fuck you, macker!
Dragon Hunters (Chasseurs de dragons) - Great, if mega-superficial children's movie. Should have seen it at the cinema, the artwork is often pretty stunning. 6.8/10
Mary and Max - It's so indie it hurts. All the bases of alienation, abuse, doomed romance and death are covered. Still very good and touching. 8.1/10
The White Ribbon (Das weiße Band) - My first Haneke movie. A total pleasure to watch, but afterwards kinda 'Huh? I have to think for myself and use my imagination? Bleh.' I understand that is his schtick. 7/10
Gonna see Caché next.
The old thread. For reference.
Spare yourself Caché. It's not horrible, but WAY overhyped.
Haneke is great, I told you to watch Das weiße Band lightyears ago.
Wolfzeit / Benny's Video .... fcking awesome, too.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0324197/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103793/
If you wanna watch another good german movie, try 'The Life of the Others'....same actors as many Haneken movies.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405094/
The Life of Others is a classic.
Did you write a review of Das weiße Band?
Trainspotting
I can't believe it has taken me this long to watch it, but I absolutely loved it. 4/5
I like costume dramas, it was wonderful.
Anyone of you saw "Atlas shrugged"?
I heared it sucked. Well, it's Ayn Rand.
Her stupid ass theses are sneered at, at the craddle of philosophy...and accordingly didn't make it far outside the united states.
yanks....take filth out a cheesy novelette and hook it up with the predicate: "philosophy". Finally something of their own, they can slightly understand...^^
I'm still boggling over the notion of Trainspotting as a costume drama.
Caché.
Yeah, it wasn't fantastic, but still nice to watch. Very Lynch-like at times.
I'm hoping he will at some point dare to make a movie with a deeply satisfying plotline. 6.3/10
Justin Bieber.Never Say Never.
KIDDING!!!!

I just spent the better part of 5 min tryn to figure out what you meant by that comment, mouse.
Let's start a new thread, this one is already too weird.
Exorcismus:The Possession Of Amy Evans
I really liked it ... 10 times better than that Insideous shite, even with the iffy wooden acting it was quite enjoyable. 6.3/10
Thor.
Better than I expected! (I didn't expect much..)

The Jacket. Sucked.
The Vanguard. Did not suck as much as The Jacket, and had zombies.
Bridesmaids (2011)
I watched this flick late last night. HAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!! It's not another so-so to awful SNL skit-flick. There are an abundance of chuckles, snickers and, best of all, quite a few belly-laughs. Melissa McCarthy had me howling at times. She wasn't the only one, either.
Quite the unexpected surprise. I give it 3.95 outta 4.00 movie Freds. Here's as link.
Amen.
Thor.
it was definitely fun to watch.
I tried to watch "Lost in Translation" for the third time last night. I know it's supposed to be a good movie but I just can't sit through it.
I made it 20 minutes into LiT. I wanted to like it, but pretentious movie is pretentious.
I got about 30 minutes into it. I think the scene that does it for me is the one where Murray's character meets the girl. She's all mopey and shit and mentions she had just graduated from Yale two years earlier and he's all pouting about his work and how they paid him 2 mill to come shoot commercials. Then it occurs to me that anyone with a degree from Yale, or someone making 2 mill for just getting their picture taken doesn't have a reason to bitch about their life and how it's not what they thought it would be. Overpriveleged whiny bastards. At that point I just quit giving a fuck and turn it off.
Hanna. Teenage girl is cute and lethal and totally freaky. When did I turn into Travis the Teen Fanboy?
Speaking of Fanboy...
just saw Fast Five.
Meh. It was pretty bad. And it wasn't even The Rock's fault. The Israeli chick was hot though.
The Innocents, 1961. Well shot, with plenty of room for the suspense elements to breathe.

Always a pleasure to watch it, when it's randomly shown on TV.
One of my favorites ever..
Agreed.
incidentally, did they dub in into German?
The Green Hornet.
Not bad. In fact, I rather liked it. Which is saying something from a movie cynic like myself. It was more entertaining than most of the films I've watched this year and 50 times more viewable than the likes of Battle: Los Angeles or that other pile of wasted celluloid that was Skyline. I didn't even sit through the entirety of either films and was glad I downloaded them for free rather than waste precious resources and valuable time renting and (god forbid) going to the cinema.
I digress.
I am not going to post any spoiler of any kind and just suggest giving it a watch. Great action scenes with a good dose of comedy thrown in for good measure.
4 stabs in the eye outta 5.

I prefer subtitles to dubbed.
My favourite foreign film is The Orphanage, Spain makes some pretty good movies.

In the eighties it was always fun going to southern Denmark where they had German channels due to proximity. Some of those kids spoke better German than Danish

Del Toro didn't direct The Orphanage, which is one reason why it's so good.
Scandinavia, full english?? More like, full original language.
Look at all these shitty countries that have to speak English.

Fucking EPIC
The Tunnel (2011)
You'd think being a low budget aussie flick it'd be shite, but it's a damn good horror and well worth a watch. 8.6/10
Best film I've seen in months.
mary and max
great movie.

Ointment.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
Acceptable. Don't know why they had to drain it of colour, though. 6.3/10
Journey to the Center of the Earth.
The one with Brendan Fraser. Totally unacceptable and extremely bad, but... well, I saw the whole thing, if only to make sure I completely know the bottom of the barrel. I thought about giving it -10 but that would make Predators look good. This is like Predators for kids. I think too much about these things. 0.1/10
The Hurt Locker.
Wait, what? This won Oscars? 5/10
London Boulevard (2010)
Sort of like a darker 4 weddings and a funeral, quite enjoyable 6.6/10

was Skyline worse than Predators though?
I enjoyed Predators .... wasn't as good as the previous films, but wasn't that bad.
Predators was better than Predator 2.

I enjoyed Predators as well. Of course I didn't have extremely high expectations, just a mindless romp of violence and gore.
What did you enjoy?
Predadog.
I have them all, yea it wasn't as good as it could have been. It had the plot of an 80's video game, just dropped on a planet and hunted, I would rather them spend a little effort expanding the mythology, it seems like they have so much to work with but are so lazy. Predator 2 was great I though.

Biutiful
Iñárritu could have cut 20-30 minutes from this and would have had a better movie. It's still a very good one, even so.
Bardem was magnificent, as always.
I would have felt like Solomon cutting the baby in half if I'd had to vote for Firth over Bardem or vice versa for best actor.
"Le Nom des Gens"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1646974/
Cute movie, has the typical french drift...gotta like that, though.
I'd vote it 7.5 (equals imdb rating) because it was a slight romantic comedy, which was still watchable.
Great to watch it with a girl, since there ain't that many movies both genders can enjoy the same.
eXistenZ
Bad. Really bad.
.2 out of 4.
Mr Brooks.
Partly great, partly lame, altogether pretty good. William Hurt playing a demon helps a lot. 6.9/10
I just sat through Dr Strangelove again. I chuckled at the strings holding the model aircraft up and noticing a few continuity problems. Still great dialogue though.
4 stabs in the eye outta 5
127 Hours.
3 1/2 stabs in the eye out of 5. I really liked the cutting scene and I was egging him on to cut that tendon. I would have stabbed this one in the eye at least 4 times but the recollection scenes nearly induced narcolepsy. Hearing his bone snap woke me from my boredom.
Spoiler tags much?
Well, the film has been out a while. Don't blame me if you haven't seen it yet.
X-Men: First class
very good. better than the last film definitely. Wolverine's cameo was great, as was Kevin Bacon.
I don't know, how you can consider a worn out concept, boring redundant shit which needed 4 tries to get decent as "very good".
2397843892745892 part anthologies can only be labled with "you get what you think you get" and not with objective criteria, because a theme-exploitation is just brainless fuck cinema, which I despise in these days.
A fresh idea >>>>> 50000000000000 billions worth of cgi.
furthermore I can't stand the mean looking faces of the usual "hollywood bunch" anymore, except I would be allowed to puke between their bleached, soulless teeth.
An home-made anthology ala Alien is still quite fine with me (also the quality loss is terryfiying again) but a comic, manga, youthbook adaption just disgusts me beyond belive.
fucking disgusting people ..
you take stupid shit way too seriously and are argumentative for the sake of being so. It's like a troll minus the entertainment value.
or you just can't accept, that some of your likes are dumb and disgust other people beyond belive.
...or you just have a massive chip on your shoulder.

I still need to see Valhalla Rising.
13 assassins. pretty decent.
I heard it's a cool film. I have a downloaded copy but the audio didn't download so well. I think I might go to the store and buy it.
True Grit.
It's hard to say if the Wayne movie was better or not, but Bridges was a damn good Cogburn.
Super 8
I saw Super 8 last night. It's nothing special, not even close. The best way I can sum it up is that it's an[spoiler] .

My sister and I once sat through a double bill of Logan's Run and Capricorn One three times, just to get away from our mom one day when she was on a tear. By the third go, we could recite long parts of both movies. We left the theater covered in popcorn thrown at us by annoyed patrons.
I only picked it up because it was $1.69, and DVD cases are like $1 each anyway. $.69 is a cheap coaster if it had turned out to be total shit, but it was relatively watchable.
Oh, and because it has O.J. Simpson attempting a serious role. Hilarity.
Capricorn One, I thought it was the best movie in the world when I was a kid.
Then I saw Cannonball Run.
The Escapist
Run of the mill prison escape movie with a very strange twist. 6/10
I thought that film was shite!
Source Code (2011)
They can hype it up as a hollywood blockbuster all they like, but it's still only getting a 6/10.
Source Code looked decent enough, but it seems to be hyped up by the same people that massively loved "Moon" because it had the same director. I have my reservations.
It was OK.... bit pants looking back. Then again, Moon was utter wank.
red ridding hood 3/5 - It really wasn't so bad.
kill the Irishman 3/5 - meh
hall pass 3.5/5 - Ha!ish
I sat the monkeys down last night and showed them Ghostbusters 1&2 back to back. It was refreshing to see their reactions and how it wasn't too different than my own as a kid. And to add to the nostalgia, I made a point of showing it to them on VHS. (I think their biggest laugh came from watching "Uncle Tefl" cuss and fight with the tracking until I said fuckit and cleaned the VCR head by hand. It did however turn into a positive lesson as they were fascinated by the inner workings of the VCR.)
I make a point of showing them at least one good old movie I grew up on each time they come over for the night. Their questions about them afterward are really fun to answer and I love to see the sense of wonder and awe they experience as they take in these "oldschool classics."
The Simpsons movie
You could argue that this would've been better 15 years ago, but I still think it's best thing they've done in years.
I made the drummer see Bridesmaids with me last night. The victory was better than the movie, which was pretty funny in parts but uneven over all.
Men only suffer through stuff like that in hopes of getting laid. It stems from our acceptance of that universal constant, "You will always pay for sex, either with money, or time."
I like your attitude. Are you single?
You know you love me.
Hall Pass
it was decent.

X-Men: First Class
Did anyone else find the cgi 80s at best? even if Magneto is fucking da bomb, Fassbender needs to get roles where he isn't fucking 15 year olds. though from IMDB I can see he has a busy next 3 years after this role. Good on him, he's the only reason to watch this.
Then again I've seen it twice. It's hard to steal much from this, besides that it's mostly useless in full. Leave your comic ideas at the door, and let them use mutants as story devices for minute time. Some charterers get about 5 minutes of scene time, no kidding, and some are used to much...wow a tornado again! blatantly racist at times, it's surprisingly enjoyable for Fassbender's amazing performance, McAvoy is no Professor X and comes across as the dumbest shit this side of the heap.
anyways. Fassbender. see Fishtank. he's great and look forward to his next films:
all these just announced

Gotta love a movie made just for the experience. Gallo is perfect in this saying absolutely nothing but noises indicating his pain.
Kudos again for making a movie that doesn't force the viewer into any particular political niche.
Although the most politicized among us will do that for themselves.

Does it really matter what we get from life that makes us happy? or is it the people. that's what the movie about, 2 people who should be happy in life are lost, and it's only when they find each other that the translation is found.

I hate musicals. Why am I watching a musical? Ever watch a movie because a friend swore up and down how great it was, but you're skeptical, but you rent it anyway, but it takes you a month to make yourself watch it? Ugh. I'm dreading it as I'm watching it.
Mamma Mia! Why? This belongs in the "I dare myself to watch it" thread.
Pierce Brosnan' s singing is about as good as cats fucking.
Haha, what did you expect?
It could have been worse, I suppose. My ears could have bled.
I rather enjoy musicals, especially Bollywood "military" musicals. The sheer campiness is entertaining, even though I can't understans a word sung.
The last American made musical I've watched and enjoyed was Chicago, with Queen Latifah and Rene Zellweger
The Road
Grr I knew I shouldn't have watched this cinematic equivalent to a 50 year old emo. That Duvall scene should just have played on for the rest of the movie. 5.9/10

Noticed it in this thread. Cute movie, no doubt. Can't rate it, though. It's too much an exception and tells it's story almost perfect, if you're open to it.
The Children
Hah! That'll teach you to not let us have ice cream for dinner.
The Disappearance of Alice Creed
Very well done kidnapping movie. Interesting and somewhat unnsuspected ending.
"There will be Blood"
well, there was boredom. hated it, crap.
In a Better World
Well worth an Oscar. They should have left its original title intact though. Revenge.
I tried to make my way through the Harry Potter movies.
I read the first 3 books, when I was 14-16, watched the 1st flick in theater, got disappointed like shit.
I caught up the following 3 movies on TV then...also shit.
Here is my reception of 5 & 6 ---------> Shit.
The story got mutilated, it's dumb, it's not even logical, if you didn't read the book. The only things that keep you watching are the 100 mio. $$ special effects.
CGI, curse of modern movieart.
I wished Terry Giliam had directed these ones, he most certainly would have given some decent english fairytale-movies to the world....which you could enjoy as adult as you could as kids.
Never read the books, but I was always more annoyed that the first 1.5 hours of each Harry Potter film was devoted to character development that I would forget by the next film and the last hour dedicated to the actual on-going plot. I'm more of the impression that an un-mutilated Harry Potter movie would be insufferably long.
I've seen them all in the cinema and I'll see the last. good popcorn fun not worth worrying about. If asked I'd have a hard time telling you the plot.
I really liked the look of the early movies, and some of the characters were great. Now it's just black and smoke and some dude looking around nervously.
they're not bad films, I just find it odd that the bulk of the actual storyline goes on in the last hour of the movie. I enjoy the films, but I forget what happened in the previous film when I watch the next one in the series as it feels like too much effort is put into creating a fictional world come to life than focusing on an ongoing plot.
That's the problem: forgettable popcorn cinema when it could have been an original, pretty gloomy fantasy saga for kids n adults, with a decent budget.
They gave away all the potential.
@Brett:
I think the books where so successfull, because of the original details, all the little things in that sorcerer world, which make you dive into it.
I liked them because of this.
I mean it's no world literature, but a cute little gem. totally overhyped though.

the trick to making a fictional world come alive is to tell the story and let the world be a setting instead of a character; the trick to character development is to tell the story and not make character development the point of telling it

Shocking...really shocking. I thought you were at least the second advanced society, behind europe, but it's like in the fucking darkages over there....christian mobs threatening people and repeating their brainwashing liturgies all over the streets...wtf fucking america?
I was also pretty sure I've seen TT patroling there in the church's favor.
You know, the guy who spottet the doctors Lexus at the Walmart parking lot....what a fucking psychopath.
the pregnancy care lady, what a fucking psychopath.
the priest...omg....what a devil...I wouldn't leave a child of mine alone with him for 2 seconds!
He seriously talked about a war demons vs angels...which is going on regarding abortions.
I guess the typical tea-party voters?
oh yeah....another thing is, that in my opinion, it's really kinky to outsource abortions.
like arnold and candace open an abortion-clinic, hire some doctors from case to case and pocket the money they get.....OF COURSE THEY HAVE JUST FINANCIAL INTEREST AND WANNA SELL THAT ABORTION AND DONT GIVE A REAL FUCK BOUT WHATS BEST FOR THE WOMEN.
I can see why some people protest against it, BUT that church guys should still get shot for their own best.
your society is fucked up hard, good night.
In hindsight, it could never have worked out for USA. They're simply too depending on millions and millions of people slaving and fighting and not evolving.
Interestingly, they seem to know this more or less subconsciously, and this leads to all kinds of fucked up beliefs built up around an old book of delusions that couldn't be further from what Americans need.
Now that the world is waking up to America's immense rape of Earth and humanity, it's going to get really interesting for independent spectators.
White America just has no real awareness of social problems, they have so many inferiority compelxes towards europe, that they waste their time justifying their social problems and playing the ball back instead of taking serious actions against the fucking fundamentals in their country.
And imagine what prestige americans had during the 80's....like top gun and shit..we all went crazy about it. Today, information-society, nothing can be kept secret (wikileaks etc) everybody just hates america for what it does, did and most probably will do...
I guess it's a generation thing...take Bill, TT, SS.,...the old fucks....they grew up in the 60's, Americas peak, it's hard for them to admit they managed world's leading country into world's leading debtor....with all the consequences,
and the younger guys, who really have a different point of view on their country (like SP, brett blabla) are just too fed up to take any action...too indifferent to develope political interest....too desillusioned to think they could change the system...shall this country burn down, we don't give a fuck.
Again, a pretty good analysis. But I don't think the younger guys can be excused for supporting the current system. There is NO reason, beyond vague ideas of insecurity.
Subservient intellectuals supporting genocide whoo hoo.
jesus, the self-righteousness of this place has somehow managed to increase...
They're so anxious to lose their prosperity, that they're scared to move. long time ago america was a progressive state...now it's medieval europe, filled with hobbits, who don't want to carry the ring.
As they try to combat the orcs while enduring the onslaught of Nazgûl swooping down on screaming fell beasts. Bromancing might save them.
Good stuff guys. Can't tell if trolling

Moon was fine. Especially if you're a 2001 fan.
I thought it was completely uneventful.
synopsis: "I'm a clone and I'm getting off this rock!" He then does so without a single hitch to his plans and the people of Earth are aghast at his plight (like they totally would be in real life.) The End.
Fine, be that way.
as I said earlier in this thread Duncan Jones hasn't quite made the great sci-fi movie that is obviously in there somewhere. I enjoyed both Moon and Source Code though I'd like to see him tackle something of a wider scope and not just single room type shoots. Seems his project "Mute" which was talked about as a homage to bladerunner has been put on hold due to funding, sad face
William Gibson is a fan and twitter feeds seem to have them talking on occasion, Neuromancer? The project is in perpetual limbo.
Kaboom
Araki unloads perhaps the lamest ending since The Village.
The film itself presents odd questions, but the answers are as fucked as the ending.
The recent Jane Eyre was terrific.
Jonah Hex
Not wonderful, but better than I expected after reading a slew of crappy reviews.
It's neither as hard to follow or as badly acted as most reviewers seemed to think.
Michael Clayton.
Liked it. Tom Wilkinson has a great part. 8/10
Also liked the recent Jane Eyre. Then watched L'empire des loups. Not as good, but notable for one stimulating ass-kicking sequence in a covered walkway.
Bride Flight
I'm a sucker for romance movies and this is the best one I've seen in a long time.
Skyline
not that bad, though I'm not sure if the cliffhanger ending was intentional or if they wrote themselves into a corner.
Rubber

the

rubber was somewhat enjoyable though its pretty obvious its a padded out short film.
watched Drive Angry last night, was not what I was expecting and ended up enjoying it for its stupidity. it's pure trash, but atleast it knows it.
Wrecked (2011)
What a crock of shite. It was as bad a Buried.
Horrible Bosses. Funny, not great, not brilliant, but good cast and some good bits.
Apparently it's a little hard getting an English subtitle file to go with this movie on a Mac but I really didn't need it. I liked the vibe of this entire movie. It's a cool flick.

Machete 2010
First film in a long time I've turned off because it was shitter than shit. Got to about 10 minutes, and that was painful.
Elephant White 2011
Yesterday was a shit film frenzy, 3.4/10.
Kevin Bacons accent was unbelievably piss poor and irritating.

Meh. Well done, but kind of a flimsy construct. 7.5/10
tornado alley
for a movie that took 8 years to make it sure is short and light on storm footage, but imax movies at the henry doorly zoo are only $5 so it's not like it was a waste of money.

We're about to revel in The Trip. Have I mentioned that I have a thing for Steve Coogan?
Another Year
I always think when I watch a Mike Leigh movie, that more than any other director, he'd be a good friend to have.
His care for humanity and his ability to portray people as real people aren't matched by anyone else making movies.
I loved this one.
Eagle Eye
Absurd of course, but I have never seen a movie more drained of personality. Is it some kind of clever twist that the dialogue could have been written by a computer? 4.3/10
Peep Show
Jean-Ralphio writes a book, gets a priapism.
Priapism is a condition, not an object.
fine then, Kate Mara got Jean-Ralphio's priapism.
Tell No One
French crime thriller, really well made - but damn, that's a convoluted plot. 7/10

Cedar Rapids
I seem to recall it being advertised as more of a straightforward comedy, but it was pretty good.
well, the missing characters in the review are p, s, m, h, n, (, s and m. there's one more missing letter that i can't be bothered to look into. doesn't really seem to spell anything out.

I got

Great movie, though I doubt DRZ's claims about it being biographical of his grandfather's encounters with avert's grandfather.
also doubt it. every movie about DRZ's grandpa's life ought to have something with "transgender" in the title.

Not bad for what it was, though a bit overly serious. Kind of felt like someone optioned the short story ages ago and some producer said "Fuck this shit!" to the Sci-Fi elements and combined it with a chickflick script he had kicking around.

I saw Cowboys & Aliens. It was exactly what I thought it would be. No more, no less.
When they rode the Alien was it hot?
Captain America.
Awful, predictable and so poorly executed.
I couldn't even finish watching it.
Also...
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1.
Absurd. I couldn't help but feel that some of the ideas in this movie where somewhat plagiarized...
A bit late here, but re: worst Tarantino - Kill Bill is really awful. I.B. is high art compared to that.
Kill Bill is nice, Kill Bill 2 is a little gem.
But I can comprehend why people could dislike KB.

Entertaining, but not in the least exciting as we have seen it all before, with cooler people.

Marwencol
Doc about a man who was beaten so badly, he forgot everything about his life.
He started taking pictures of a town in WWII Belgium he's built using dolls for citizens.
It sounds fairly boring, but there's a kind of therapy here and maybe some redemption amongst his loneliness, his hopes and needs and the fact the art world discovered and treasures his photographs.
Definitely worth a watch.
Arthur (2011)
considering it took me a week of viewing the trailers for it to even register as being a remake of Arthur, I thought it was pretty good.
Did you like the first one?
Brett is a brave man if he says yes.
I haven't seen the original in years.
honest.
it ain't that bad. mostly when you forget it's a remake.
in fact it's hardly a remake. besides the rich and the drunk.
supporting cast is quite enjoyable.
I'd recommend it for what it is, certainly could of been better if they went further with the concept. also I'm not a big fan of the the star.
watched "Bad Teacher" last night and found it laughable in parts but mostly unsuccessful as a story. There just simply wasn't a plot that made it worth anything. I mean it's all there, the characters, the actors, the premise. Re-writes - re - writes. something got lost. The second act drags with a huge setup and no payoff (the tutoring) and instead skips ideas in favor of bad jokes near the end that just don't payoff. Also the fact that Diaz needs tits to get a man is laughable, she has eyes that eat a void and a smile that devours worlds, who is even looking at her tits?
"Priest"
I haven't seen anyone mention this yet so I figured I'd but a word in.
what a messed up...er...mess.
totally enjoyable film for action fodder but what a missed concept. The logline promises vampires fighting ninjas and we just don't get the payoff. what we get is, and I haven't exactly timed it, about 20 mins of people riding turbine motorcycles, around 15 mins or cartoon exposition, 30 mins of religious annoyance, then finally few minutes of cgi vampires that make it not worth much. Hard to say what went wrong here, but I think it was a need to try and fill in some gap about why "vampires exist" and why "priests fight them". All good and stuff, but if this went camp instead it coulda been great. I mean who really needs to know why this is happening? Just give me bad ass scenes of action. maybe "Priest2 - in Space" will be better.

It's this odd thing with comedy scripts these days where they are often well written in advance then when they get on set they improvise the whole thing. I hear "30 mins or less" is a disaster of a film but the script was on the "blacklist" last year, and hardly follows the original writing.
And I'm not saying "get him to the Greek" was in anyway a great movie, just that I didn't mind Brand so much in it.

Cassel plays the bad guy to perfection.

Sex Pot. This movie is so fucking bad it defies explanation. I honestly think they let a group of retarded 12 year olds write the script. Jebus wept, this movie sucked.
I saw Limitless. I don't know if I reveled in a cinematic endeavor, but I very much enjoyed the trippy visuals and imagining what it would be like to have absolute brainpower. The ending, though. What a copout.
Prince of Persia
not bad, though the oldest brother was white as hell.

it wasn't bad, but kind of a missed opportunity. Though I watched it while sober too, so that was also a missed opportunity on my part.
This was an underrated gem.
The Day the Earth Stood Still, new version, because it was on TV.
Wow. It was like they had a competition of how best to fuck up this movie. I really wanted to like it, but I just didn't get a chance. 3/10

but jason biggs is a pisshead, thank god he's not considered as a serious actor.
The World's Fastest Indian
Hopkins is an old, sick Kiwi who travels to USA to set the land-speed record on an old piece of junk. I could see why this is one of LF's favourite movies.
For me at least it was another movie that confronted me with my negative expectations of how things turn out in these kinds of stories. Just waiting for when the nice old man meets a cruel twist of fate. But no, _everyone_ is an angel in disguise. I guess we buy that because the movie is set in a sixties where people had the chance to be decent, not yet being swept up in the sociological horrors of later decades. Or maybe it's because it wasn't made by an American. 7/10
NOUR!!
Aw, but he's also endlessly endearing and wise.
Okay then.
Visioneers
a bit heavy-handed on the satire, but not bad.
Mars Needs Moms
OK, where to start? When I heard it was originally a book by Berkeley Breathed my interest was peaked. Seriously, the author of Bloom County wrote a sci-fi story, cool! Then I seen it was a Disney pic... fuck. It all goes downhill from there.
There is too much of a reliance upon the animation to carry the film. In fact, the animation gets totally in the way of the story. They did a great job in parts of capturing the actors faces and such but overall they just went nuts with it and it got out of hand. Yet another film that relies on special effects to cover up shitty writing.
And what the hell was up with the constant scenes of the characters falling? Yeah, Mars has only 38% the gravitic attraction as Earth, but they show the characters falling for miles at a time (repeatedly into a giant piles of scrap iron no less) and they just jump up like it never happened. My ass.
There is a scene at the end of the film that actually got me bitching loudly at the screen. Humans running across the surface of Mars with no spacesuit. WTF? Mars has at most 1% of the atmospheric pressure of Earth. Lets not forget an average temperature of -67F. And yet they run across the surface like it's a park in Nevada or something. Just at sunrise no less where the temps would be the coldest. They would have been swollen, freeze-dried, meat-cicles in just a couple of seconds.
And last but not least, there is the way they ripped off every alien encounter/abduction story ever (and badly at that. Trust me, I could go for an hour describing the ways they stole ideas and fucked them up.) Hell, even the poster was a ripoff of the classic Close Encounters poster of the kid looking out the front door. It's just one big ripoff of ideas one after another.
To sum it up, this movie sucked. And yes, it's just a cartoon but shit like the surface scenes are just inexcusable.
nice review tefl, Id never make ore then 10 mins
a side note
while watching "rise of the apes" my cohort said a brilliant thing:
"These Apes really hate glass!"
I found it too funny to not post.
this comment came after many sequences of them jumping trough glass most notable from the office building.
you'd think a smart ape would try and toss a heavey obelect first?
anyways best joke I got out of it

indeed it's creepy
the Beaver
if you can get past Mel Gibson's personal life, it's pretty good.
Body of Lies
Another tale of 'We're fucking up in the Middle East, while being incredibly heroic'. Embarrassing movie, really. Leo is totally unconvincing, Crowe is hamming it up, and the story is completely far fetched. Add to that a subplot of childish cross-culture romance and you get... 7.1 on IMDb, I guess. 2.5/10
Edit: Lowered rating after further reflection.

Milk.
Suddenly I don't know why I watched this movie.
I guess it kind of won me over in the end, with some of that well made sentimental schmaltz I'm such a gay sucker for.
But really, everyone in this movie is kind of bland scum. Except Emile Hirsch, he was pretty cute. 6.7/10
Watch The Mayor of Castro Street instead. Milk was just MEH.
I enjoyed watching Milk but it's not a film I would ever bother with watching twice.

I just watched Jesus create life when my sister gave birth. This is far greater than any "movie" you watch in a theater.
Jesus didn't have shit to do with it unless he's a rapist zombie.
Did you eat that baby when it came out?
The environmental impact that one baby makes is justification to eat as many as you see fit. God and that one dude who was too stupid to move when they nailed him down don't want you to destroy this planet that was made just for you.
Babies don't eat cud or have cloven hooves, so its kosher.
They taste like old yoghurt, though.

Looks like a whole lot of crazy.
Just finished Red State. It's a pretty good flick that keeps you interested what's coming next. It suffered a bit by being stiff-legged when it came to the gun play and such. The entire last 8 1/2 minutes could have been completely whacked off the end of it however and it would have been a very different, and I think, much better movie. A good fan edit is in order at some point.
is Red State actually out now?
It's on VOD and available for torrent.
www.cooperdell.com
for all the hype it's a snoozefest.
The Guard. Funny as hell, very Irish. Witty, lyrical, whimsical script. More about place, character, and culture than cop drama or western.
Red State
it was pretty good. A more successful departure for Smith than Jersey Girl was, though it kind of felt like some of the story should've been expanded a bit. Michael Park was good, though.
Super 8
It's like a committee got together and decided to smash Cloverfield into the Goonies. There where some pretty good scenes but overall it's a giant steaming turd of a movie. It's the kind of flick you'll only watch once.
Or, not at all.
The River Murders (2011)
Not great ..... but quite watchable.
The Greatest Movie Ever Sold
Not quite as interesting as Super Size Me, but a pretty interesting look at advertising.
It was hard to really understand the point of movie. He goes around trying to sell ad space on not a "movie" but on a long commercial. There really isn't much substance to the whole thing in the end except that he was able to raise the millions to make it. What he was really selling was himself as a known documenting entity, never once painting the whole ordeal in any bad light or for that matter really telling us anything we don't already know. Unlike "Super Size Me" this movie will have no effect on the market in general and is self serving. I have to guess he thought it would be harder then walking into POM and getting a couple million, a real film can't budget this way not one with real ideas made by people trying to get a start. still he is very charismatic and I'd likly watch him do most anything.
altered
they make a big deal about how if they kill an alien then the earth is fucked. so then they kill a whole shitload of aliens and the ufo warps off all exit stage left like "oh shit two humans fought back. time to skedaddle!" the final shots of the movie really should have been an alien war fleet warping in over the town or something else that would at least reinforce the point the main character had been making the entire movie. i mean, at one point he's even asked what would happen if they killed the alien and he says that humanity would be slaughtered like an animal that killed a human. instead the last scene is he and his girlfriend driving off and she asks "are we going to be alright?" and he just says "we'll see." camera pulls out to show a wide shot of the sky behind the van. that's it.

besides my week of movies Ive never seen;
Titanic - too long, but I get it. the last act is intense
Good will hunting - um yup. it won best screenplay, it's pretty fucking good
Da vinci code and angels&demons - Dumb
a.I - i didn't understand the 3rd act
newer stuff;
Hesher -the trailer is better than the movie. love the cast. love concept. but there is no purposeful plot. don't take my word for this one, might end up a cult favorite all the love fans are given it
Bunraku- if you make a movie purposely cliche i'll allow for bad dialogue. purposely in cardboard world i'll allow for bad sets. but this whole thing was "a world without guns" so the fight scenes should be a big portion of your budget...yawn. skip it, what cast waste. it sat in post-hell a year for a reason
AI was 2 hours of alternate endings. You could've shut off the movie every 25 minutes or so and had an ending to the story.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway fuck for 1/3 of the film. The rest of it's pretty good too.

I finally got around to watching the directors cut of Donnie Darko. I was disappointed. The theatrical release was much better and didn't lead you by the fucking hand like the DC version did. Tomorrow I plan to watch S. Darko. I've heard it's shit but what the hell, why not.
Yesterday I watched what is without a doubt one of the cheeziest balls of shit ever. 2012 Doomsday. Just bad christian bullshit for an hour and a half. When I saw the cover of the DVD at the local library I knew it was going to be terrible but I figured what the hell, I need a laugh. It's so rotten you can't even laugh at it. You will just sit in stunned silence at just how goddamned awful it is. The science was like something from the dark ages, the acting was a kindergarten school play, the special effects were special-ed, and even the religious bullshit, was made up bullshit. They didn't even get that right. Just, wow. This film should only be watched in film schools as a prime example of how not to make a film.
If you're lucky, they won't buy a new one if you scratch it strategically.
That's a thought but with the strangled budget the local library gets I'd rather not be responsible for them wasting even more funds trying to replace it.
Indeed, it's a gamble.
Tree of Life
this will not be for everyone by a long way, and it opens rather self indulgent with the creation life that will have the majority of people turning it off
but...when it starts moving i was mesmerized, in total awe of a movie telling a story through bursts of episodic memory. the way all of us really remember things. on my top ten list for the year easy
It will be on a lot of lists. Terrence Malick is beloved of many film fans.
It's still a must see for me.
Paganini (Klaus Kinski, 1989)
no plot-just a 2 hour long montage of spellbinding art and music.
Great as this is, I feel like it opens doors for someone to make a truly magnificent modern film about Paganini.

drive... love how Nicolas Winding Refn uses music... one of my new favorite directors
also... the scene with the fork and gurgling... awesome
I hate it when the trailer shows the whole movie. What's the point, then?
the trailer is pretty on the nose about the action plot but devoid of the emotion involved in the film, and there's a lot of non-action scenes. Its not a chase movie, the "Drive" being more :exp : to strive vigorously toward a goal or objective; to work, play, or try wholeheartedly and with determination.
It's not the movie i read the script for several months back, I've heard the one i got my hands on was the original draft back when Hugh Jackman was attached to play "Driver" but after he dropped out and the director quit a re-write shrunk the script by almost 30 pages and it almost didn't get made until Gosling heralded it to producers and even got the director he wanted. It's still a good movie....
the screener on the torrent sites has the unfinished score burrowing songs from 'the social network" and others it's distracting at times to hear reznors music over some of the dialogue scenes, so opt to either see the finished movie i theaters or wait til a decent copy hits the netz it might soil it for you. (I'm guessing LF saw the screener)

Unsolvable, meaning the guys outside the elevator had little hope of affecting what happened. Guess it's like a disaster movie in that way. The Towering Inferno, but with evil.
As for guessing the bad guy, there's no way to certain during the movie. It's all a matter of weighing probabilities after considering hints in the movie and metastuff like the screenwriter's history. To a certain extent, it's a futile exercise, and I consider people who claim to early have been sure about the killer - and stuck with that person throughout the movie - to be suffering from self-delusion and false memory. But I'll make an exception in your case.
The Men Who Stare at Goats
Le meh. Yet another movie that should have been made in another decade. I had some hopes for the cast, but they all play annoying people. 6/10
I liked that movie. It had it's meh moments but it was a fun flick. I've read the book by Jon Ronson, seen the BBC documentary about it called "Crazy Rulers of the World," and listened to severzal interviews with Jim Channon. Heck, I even have a copy of the First Earth Battalion operations manual. It's all wacky fun.
I enjoyed it, too, even though I can't say I thought it was "good". It was very uneven. I felt the inspired lunacy outweighed the meh.
I think my only problem with Men Who Stare At Goats is that Ewan McGregor can't do an American accent; especially a Southern one.
Warning: Liberal bleeding heart PC rant.
It all left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't think you can be a cynic about US war intelligence and transport that cynicism over to victims of that intelligence. There's just a cloud of desensitization over the entire movie, apparently with just one motive: Get well-educated cynics chuckling at the insanity they passively support every day, be it torture, animal cruelty, war crimes, state-sponsored occultism or murder. Ho ho, you only paid for all this, I can see why you need to wash it down with LSD.
Personally, I think the film should not have been done as a comedy. It is at it's heart a horror story about the perversion of self-discovery & universal truths for diabolical means.
I watched one of my all-time favorites again, Bubba Ho-Tep. It gets better everytime I see it.
I have to find a copy of that book. It's been on my to-read list for too long.
Thanks to Fawkes mentioning of the flick, Zero Day, I just watched it. Maybe I'm just too jaded but I didn't give a damn throughout the entire film. The two main characters where just overpriveleged selfish whiney bastards and I kept finding myself saying over and over, "I don't care. Shut up. Get on with it."
There was about a minute of the film that peaked my interest and that was the rampage itself but even that died out quickly. By the end I actually said to the screen "Just shoot yourself already so this shit will end." But it didn't, it just dragged on.
One star for the shooting, the rest is just meh.
You were out of high school before Columbine, right?
Everyone my age who has watched it was scared to death. I was hoping they would back out, and those screams at the end are just chilling.

The primary effect of school shooting sprees has been to "justify" an ever increasing police presence, and an ever-growing authoritarian regime in the schools. When I was a kid, we never, ever saw a cop in the grade schools except "Officer Friendly" types. In high school it was much the same, although on two occasions the county mounties ran drug dogs through the halls, sniffing at lockers. First time they found some pot, but couldn't prove whose it was. Second time the dope dog went nuts at a locker door they popped the locker open and set off an aerosol canister filled with ammonia and concentrated skunk oil. The dog went out of business thereafter, and they couldn't prove a damned thing about the "perpetrators".
On any given day there were at least a couple dozen people packing pistols, and the school had a "Rod & Gun Club" with a firing range out alongside the football field. If a couple of misfit geeks with delusions of martyrdom had started shooting, there would have been people shooting back.
No cops, no metal detectors, no transparent book bags, many local redneck type kids well armed, and we never had a weapon pulled in the school. When the cops with their drug dog showed up the first time at a "mandatory student assembly", about 70 of us got up and walked out - including the student body president and 3 of the 4 class representatives. There were only 6 cops and a couple administrators, they couldn't stop us.
Fuck acclimatization to authority.
Oh yeah - just watched a somewhat fun film Troll Hunter done in the hand-held poorly lighted style, but treating its subject seriously enough to make that non-objectionable. Not great art, but very watchable.

The Perfect Host
not quite what i expected, but better for it.
So I watched Perfect Host just now and I really enjoyed the first half but it takes a sour turn in the end with far too many Gotcha twists that don't add up very well, and the last scene is pretty painful. It's a shame they felt a need to resolve it that way.
the ending was a bit awkward, but I thought it was pretty good as a whole.
Dr. Niles Crane! Fucking insane man!
I always thought he would make a great crazy dude.
Tron: Legacy
I haven't seen the original film in full in probably 20 years. Not quite sure if it's really a sequel to the original as the plot seems to indicate otherwise. Either way, not bad. Kind of felt like 1997 when Hollywood discovered the internet. (see: Jonny Mnemonic)
I watched W. last night.
Two+ hours of reassurance that yes, the world is insane. And so are those that run things.
Batman Year 1. Pretty good. The art passed; the rendering / animation / effects were competent; the writing was good. I like the harder-hitting version of the tale - Jim Gordon has an excellent moment or two. "It's been years since I had to take out a green beret …… but still; he deserves a handicap" (throws his gun away, tosses a baseball bat to the green beret)
I might have been enjoying seeing it before release a bit more than it actually deserved, though; you can check me on this one - still; there are some good violence scenes in.
We revelled in Tucker and Dale vs. Evil , which turned many hillbilly horror movie stereotypes on their shaggy, unkempt heads. Fun stuff.
Bad Teacher
it was pretty funny. watching Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake dry-fuck was one of the oddest things ever, though. Needed more Eric Stonestreet.
Scream 4
there was apparently a market for a 4th film/quasi-remake. I didn't see the 3rd film, but I don't feel like I missed anything.
at least Alison Brie was in it.
I enjoyed The Perfect Host. I'm not sure I bought the big twist but, after that, nothing else was surprising.
I watched Troll Hunter last night. What a clever and fun film. It was far better than I expected it to be and it manages to poke fun at and lampoon so many things, including itself.
I give 3 out of 4 billy goats gruff.

Hanna
Neater than Kick-Ass and more serious.
I liked the girl. I almost always like Eric Bana. I thought Cate Blanchett chewed up the scenery a bit, but I still enjoyed it.
Yes, Hanna was a pretty engaging character for a non-human predator. I think I liked her ditzy friend more though.
Because her ditzy friend would fuck you and not kill you afters.
Shit, Hanna would kill you before.
Vidocq
Finally saw this after Rokkr's recommendation. A dark, very very french fantasy thriller, built from a lot of random elements*, and filmed to nauseate the viewer. The camera is hyperactive and CGI-boosted and likes to get close up in people's sweaty, oozing faces and then do a 360 just for the hell of it.
Still, pretty entertaining. 6.8/10
*Apparently Vidocq is the source of all detective novels: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eug%C3...C3%A7ois_Vidocq
Captain America Fuck Yeah
the most historically and technologically accurate depiction of WWII. I thought it was good overall, though probably would've been a bit better as a stand-alone film rather than a precursor to The Avengers movie.

Tree of Life
A large part of this was heavy handed and almost masturbatory, but it's a beautiful movie, nonetheless.
I feel like it had a lot more potential than was realised, because the experimental parts(in one section, 20+ minutes of space/evolution images, set to droning music and people speaking to their god) and non-linear story were too much coupled together in such a heavy handed way.
A little too much poet in the director's soul.
I enjoyed it, despite being annoyed with it at times.
The Sound of Insects
Loosely based on a man who went into the woods and starved himself to death while recording the process in a journel. While the story was ok the garish music/sounds that they randomly used made it hard to watch. The whole "documentary" is someone reading his journal entries while there are scenes from nature and city life flashing. I was dissapointed when I found out it was based on a diff. story and not real.

Gran Torino
White racists are secretly Jesus! It all makes sense now. 6/10
Gran Torino was one of the worst movies I've seen the gets an inexplicable amount of love. "Fuck you, slope nigger! lol jk. y u mad, bro?" seemed to be the message of the film.
Indeed. But people were crazy about Million Dollar Baby too. He must push some buttons we haven't acquired.
Also, the dude playing Thao is the worst actor I have ever seen. In fact he's making me racist as I can only conclude that he is somehow correctly demonstrating the personality of the Hmong people.
Million Dollar Baby wasn't bad, but Gran Torino was by almost every definition a bad film, yet it gets lot of love. Terrible acting (all the Asian actors were terrible and Clint Eastwood was basically playing himself, albeit in a Not Sure If Serious way.) and a plot that can be pretty much summed up as a white-washing of racist history. And that song at the end, oh my...
granted, I enjoyed it in a so-bad-it's-good kind of way...
Haha, the song! I couldn't believe my ears.
MDB wasn't bad? You girlyman. It was intolerable.
MDB the sad win for best picture in 2004 had shit to compete with. Besides the fact that Aviator was nominated in almost very category and won nothing. Expect I think Schoomooker won editing like always.
Its not a movie worth a cent. Morgan Freeman got the award he should have got for Shawshank and Everyone thought Eastwood was dying.
Gran Tarino is horse dung, I've seen after school specials more enjoyable

Thank you.
The King's Speech
Well made, but I think it's too small a movie to carry all the praise. They could e.g. have elaborated more on the subtle hints that the royal family is a bunch of inbred retards. But this is another movie where we are supposed to feel good along with the royalty and at the same time kind of acknowledge their higher place in society. 7/10
The fact everyone is bitching about Gran Torino means it's probably a great film. I shall find out soon enough for myself.
I have a feeling you'll like it. I don't really mean it as a backhanded comment.
hrmm. We shall see.
Until then, please feel free to explain why you think so.
I can't really explain why I feel that way, just seems like something you'd like.
I honestly felt alone in my opinion that it was a bad movie. I enjoyed it in the same way that I enjoyed the Wicker Man remake: it was so bad it was good. But msot seemed to genuinely like Gran Torino.
Well, the addition of the Man With No Name usually makes any movie better no matter how bad they are

He's definitely the best thing about it, and I bet you will feel a tingling in your groins when he does his 'retired Dirty Harry' schtick. But then, you know, they have to go and change him. Meanwhile everything around him is so clichéd you feel like you're having constant deja vus. And then comes the acting. You better not have high standards.
Even Eastwood's Dirty Harry schtick kind of came across as "Not Sure if Serious". Gran Torino kind of came off like it was supposed to be jokey, but I think it was 100% serious.

I fucking watched "The Men who Stare at Goats" because nobody warned me it's a Clooney thing. Many of my California friends loved it, so I tried, but I disliked it all the way through. The Men who Stare at Goats was great. It's one of my all-time favorites, shitty acting be damned.
Sorry
I just can't hang with George. It's partly his voice and partly his giant goony face. Something there just pisses me off. I suspect I would have liked it if but for Clooney.
It helped that I read the book and listened to numerous interviews with the writer before seeing it. It helped a whole lot.

Fuck. Really hard to rate this movie. I was both annoyed, elated, impressed and depressed. In the end I have to admit it was probably a fucking great movie, but, argh.
A scary thing is, I found it in the children's library. I'm pretty sure this is not a children's movie, but a child psychiatrist's movie.
Let me quote some review: "Fragmented moments offer insight into the wild things as it becomes apparent that each of them relate to an aspect of Max himself, but we are offered very little to aid us in our conclusions or even cover up the gaping holes between the fragments. In some sense this is a genius way to expound this examination of a young mind, in others it is a frustrating experience that is difficult to grasp." Yeah. 5-10/10

Magic!

After tormenting myself with "The Lost Boys", one of the worst movies I've ever seen, I thought 'why not trying the same movie from the same era again?' So I grabbed Near Dark.
Not bad. I just made through the first hour, but I was pleasently suprised. Kathryn Bigelow had some good flicks out (noteable, because directing isn't a female domain at all) and this one was darker and more brutal than I thought. A dirty Twilight, before the twilight novells ever raised from the hell of the untalented.
But afterall..I can'gt stand these Vamire-Roadmovies-Crossovers. Rate it a nicely 6-7.
I'm going to watch "The Thing" tonight. Just watched the 80's remake a couple of days ago, so I can compare it quite I guess. Let's have a try.

Had some funny moments, but it wasn't bad.
In AYE defense I think Near Dark is a pretty good Western Vampire movie. It's pretty cheesy 80s at some points but overall worth the watch for solid characters and story. Plus you get Bishop as the dark father figure and Hudson as the crazy wild card!

Fucking cool.
97.
I got to see most of the new Muppet film today. It's been a while since I've seen the original films, but I thought it was pretty good. Knowing that Bret McKenzie of Flight of the Conchords wrote the songs adds an extra layer to the musical numbers.
Super 8

day of the dead (2008)
since this movie was a direct-to-dvd/blu-ray release it seems like the team involved took that as a challenge to set the quality bar even lower. i think they might have succeeded.

don't think Ive seen that one, but for some reason i watched Survival of the Dead the follow up which was actually written and Directed by George A. Romero and it was amazingly bad.
edit: Is it stupid to look forward to Romero's remake of Argento's "Deep Red"?
Did anyone already watch "Immortals"?!

Yeah I was surprised that I ended up enjoying that one. The mocap was all right. "ABSURDLY POWAFUL END BOSS" guy was entertaining as heck. The opening airport sequence was strangely soothing.
I don't know what film I just watched, started with a B and was a western type film made this year.
Anyway, very good. 7.2/10.
Cool, I should watch that.
Blackthorn!!!!!!!!!!!!!
30 Minutes or Less
Not bad, but not quite as heavy on the comedy as I thought it would be.
catch 44. not to bad good one time watch.
Sucker Punch
Seemingly equal parts awesome and awful. Worth seeing though.
I sure didn't mind the visuals

The Way Back
Top shelf direction from master craftsman Peter Weir.
An escape of 4,000 miles. Amazing.
The Descendents
A stirring documentary on the Orange County punk band.
Crazy, Stupid, Love
Not bad, better than expected. I've been a bit indifferent to Steve Carrell since his last few seasons with The Office were thoroughly obnoxious. It's also weird hearing one of the Backyardigans talk about masturbating.

The green hornet was terrible. It was funny in parts, but overall it's the sort of flick that gets watched once and then is placed on the shelf forever.
It was fairly lackluster. Three montages is practically phoning it in.
Meanwhile, I Love You Phillip Morris. Rarely have I routed so much for either a con man or Jim Carrey. Unexpected movie.
Yall suck.
(I also liked ILY Phillip Morris, though)
Phillip Morris was a really good flick. That one I liked.
I'm surprised a lot of people didn't seem to like Philip Morris.
Jim Carrey should stick to his serious-ish roles.

Win Win
As with The Station Agent and The Visitor, Tom McCarthy nails it again. Warmth without schmaltz.
If you like feelgood movies without the Hollywood heavy handedness, try these three.
Broken Hill
Quite enjoyable Aussie flic about a sheep station lad with dreams of becoming composer/conductor. 7.9/10

It was surprisingly better than I had expected
Hostel 3
I loved the first two, but this was more of a low budget B movie. 5/10

"Blue Valentine"
God, god fucking damn fucking dreck and I even didn't manage to complain enough to get it turned off after the first couple of minutes.
It's like some chicks and fucks on facebook thought: "we not only can create super-witty wordplays and groups, we should also give the internetcommunity a brain-melting, pseudo-realistic piece of rattenscheisse, with a slimey, power-worked-out, self-absorbed bastard aryan protagonist, they can vote 8 for on imdb and therefore feign some aspiration, but the average teenietwitterer mustn't be overchallenged, so under it's pretentious and newww, dirty, exciting, unbelievable realistic look, it's just the meaningless standard-dreck, romantic-dramedies with ridiculously talentless scripts and directors used to be, of course..

The Trip

I enjoyed it very much. I like britain, it reminded me of the time in Cornwell, although it takes place in the north of england.
Basically a Trip through the isle, with 2 quite cool, bloody english buddies and lot's of exotic, typical-english cuisine.

Yet another book to add to my list. The business plot I've read about before and now that you mention it, some of the parallels between the film and it are pretty obvious. Interesting. I'll do some more research into it.

Fright Night (2011)
haven't seen the original, but this one was Chekov and Dr Who vs Colin Ferrel and McLovin.
That sounds like a fine goofy celebrity Death Match. I liked the original. Haven't seen the new one. Drummer hates vampires and zombies. He will be useless in the apocalypse.
Final Destination 5
Just about watchable and completely ruined by pointlessly shite 3D special effects. 5/10

God of Carnage.
it's good, you can watch it.
No one seen Sherlock Holmes yet? Much funnier than the first one, a lot more action, still not as good with the mystery and story line was a bust. Less believable, compared to the books. I still love Watson though.

Take Shelter. I wouldn't say it's the Feel-Bad movie of the year, but it's definitely the Unsettling and Disturbing one.

not bad, though the portions where Julia Roberts were pretty bad. She felt very shoe-horned in.

Just finished watching this. Probably one of the best compiled film soundtracks I've ever heard. Good movie, too.
Unstoppable. Yep. It was a movie alright.
I watched Cowboys and Aliens the other day. I was unimpressed.
I did however get the chance to sit my niece and nephew down and show them the original theatrical release of Star Wars. It really made my heart proud to see them riveted to the screen. They now are clamoring to see the next two films. The best part, hearing him say "This movie was WAY better than those new ones."
Cowboys and Aliens was so much cooler when it was a serialized graphic novel. (By which I mean comic book.)
I never read the comic. The movie has many similarities to a couple of books I've read by Bruce Boxleitner, Frontier Earth, and Frontier Earth: Searcher.

How will you decide who will be the first to die, if it's all black people?
their white friend dies first, duh.
which of the group of black people is the white friend?
the white girlfriend.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Cave of Forgotten Dreams
Bless Werner Herzog, I don't think the man knows how to make an unwatchable movie.
This is a fascinating doc about the oldest known artwork in the world.
sadly it never showed here in 3D
RocknRolla
Enjoyable enough, though not as good as Lock Stock or Snatch.

I'm still not a Portman fan and Aronofsky still has some blind spots, but that third act is definitely great cinema.

Occupant (2011)

Nicely done by Takashi Miike.

8.2/10.
I watched The Darkest Hour last night. I'm really hoping I don't have to review this one, because it's much harder to write a bad review than it is to write a good one. One word sums it up though, lame. I think I only enjoyed one scene, which was 10mins before the movie ended, heh.

Limitless (2011)
Pretty good, recommended. 7.4/10
I really enjoyed Limitless. Had no idea what it was about going in.
Last night's film was the original Dragnet. I remember watching the show when I was younger... but for some reason I had it in my head it was a comedy. Probably because of the remake. Enjoyable enough, even with only one really funny sequence. I found it especially interesting to see how much has changed about people's rights with regards to the police since those days.

Cowboys and Aliens.
It had cowboys. and aliens.
A Noble Lie. It's really interesting documentary about the OK Fed bombing with a ton of new information and interviews.
Last night's film was Re-Animator. Just a cheesy low-budget gore flick. Best not to really think when watching it or it'll start to piss you off.

What, that's a classic.

Paranormal Entity which is the low budget spin off is actually a lot better than both of the Paranormal Activities.
Black Dynamite
funniest movie of the past decade. the cartoon needs to come out soon...
And because the other one had me wanting to watch this one... Tonight's movie was the new Dragnet.
This had the comedy I remembered. I liked where they actually used a few good lines from the old movie. Still, it lacked something that the original had, even if I can't quite explain it. Maybe it's just part of the whole "over the top 80's cop movie" thing.

P.A.G.A.N. ( People Against Goodness And Normalcy )

Piranha 3D
Watching fish eat spring break morons sounds like the plot of my favorite movie, but alas. 3/10
Piranha 3D ....... FFS ......... I hereby ban you from ever posting in this thread ever again.
I think we watched like 10 minutes of that because Adam Scott was in it.
What is wrong with this picture? You people will watch fucking Piranhas 3D and not Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. You. Have. No. Taste.
It probably won't help my case, but I was not responsible for the choice of movie.
Just because you were stoned is no defence.
On the subject of Dale and Tucker;
find nothing http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0479527/ he does funny funny.
There is a reason every show he is in gets canceled. you not funny you fuck.
I refuse to watch anything about him.
Sorry, Tyler was damned funny in Reaper.
30 Minuets or Less.
If you can actually sit through the first 30mins of bore, the movie later picks up and gets a little more tolerable.
I enjoyed it, I have to say. It was funny.
Tonight's film: Horrible Bosses
Better than I expected. Maybe it's just Charlie Day, but it kinda felt like a really long episode of It's Always Sunny, minus Danny Devito. Good for some stupid laughs.

Tonight's movie: We're No Angels (the original)
Very charming and fun. Worth watching.

Deep Gold 2011
6.5 on the IMDb .... Reading the reviews, it's obviously been rigged. It's fucking shite and I lasted a whole 13 minutes before having to turn it off. Quite possible THE worst acting I've ever seen. 0/10
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0929742/

Real Steel (2011)
Why the fuck did I think it was a good idea to watch a film about boxing robots. Utter wank.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0433035/
HA!
Drive. I can't remember seeing a mainstream movie with less dialogue. Not since Silent Movie, anyway. It was grim but well shot. I kept reading comments about how well the music was integrated with the action in the film. It got annoying after a while, I thought. Repetitive. Maybe that was the point.
Tonight's movie: The Jerk
I'm not sure how I never saw this before. I'm not a big fan of Steve Martin, but this was pretty decent. Ahh, the joys of stupid-funny movies.

Best scene:
Nostalgia for the Light, about the lasting imprint of Pinochet on modern Chile, the Atacama Desert and the intersection of astronomy and archaeology. Very philosophical, more poetic than narrative.
Les aventures extraordinaires d'Adèle Blanc-Sec
Fun French adventure story based on some comics I read as a kid. Still, it's Luc Besson :/ 6.5/10
Tonight's Movie: The Frisco Kid
Enjoyable enough. I'm always amused when Hollywood casts Italians as Indians.

Grey Gardens (1975)
I watched Grey Gardens last night. Read about it here. This is a truly surreal documentary.
Amen.
Ooh, sounds good.
The King's Speech
very good.
Grey Gardens was really good.
The Darkest Hour: 3-D. Not bad, don't expect a lot from it if you're going to pick it apart, but if you're into some cheesy sci-fi (like me) then its a goodie. Kinda like Independence Day without all the "America! Hell yeah!" I'll give it 4 out of 5 because I enjoyed it. I loves me some sci-fi. Aliens and spaceships are cool.

Not as scary as I remembered. And I get a little tired with Donald Sutherland, he always seems to take up too much space with his goofiness.
Still, lots of nice touches. 7/10
Tonight's movie: Battlefield Baseball
I was expecting something like Shaolin Soccer, but this was a lot dumber. Still very funny, but the jokes are a lot more random. Good for a laugh.

War Horse (2011)
Man loses horse, little girl finds horse, little girl loses horse, man finds horse. *weepy music* THE END
Barely watchable. 5/10

Not bad. Something about Cher just bothers me, though. That, and watching an entire movie about Italian New Yorkers without a single mob reference is just weird.

Underworld.
It was alright. Not great, not fantastic, but there were mystery elements, action sequences that was amazing, Beckinsale was hot as hell, and the story line was continuous, but backwards, obviously. I guess you'll have to be a fan to enjoy it. Was kinda short though, like 1hr 20/25 mins?
just watched your highness... kinda funny... i would wear a minataur dick necklace...

Surprisingly more fun than I expected. Of course, you can't go wrong when there's someone credited as "Knife-in-butt Killer".

I have to agree with Tefl,It's definitely worth watching even if it was made for TV. I found it to be a bit more entertaining than the original. (The worst thing about the original is Shelley Duvall.Worst actress ever.)
You're the first people I heard who liked the 97 version. I am not going to watch it.
Funny thing about Duvall, in the extras she has the most fantastic, dreamy face you just want to see contorted by orgasms. Not the dissolved fish face of the movie. Kubrick could have given us like 10 seconds with the good face, to build up sympathy.
But it's obvious she's not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
What I liked about the remake was that they were able to flesh out the story and the characters due to the extended length of the film. That and the fact it was much closer to the book.
However, as films go, the original was superior in most ways.
I thought Duvall's bug-eyed hysteria added to the Carnival from Hell creepitude. Plus, one could easily understand her husband wanting to kill her and her son being off his little rocking horse.
I made the mistake of not watching the Kubrick version of the Shining until after i read the book. I thought the movie was art-house bullshit that missed the point of the book.
All those tons of cherry Nehi = AWESOME. Brett = Shelley Duvall-style crazy.

Tonight's Movie: Killer Klowns from Outer Space
What can I say? It's a classic.

i used to have nightmares about those clowns.

Yeah, I imagine a lot of our generation did.

Tonight's Movie: The Return of Swamp Thing
Because I rewatched the original a little while back, and just got around to this one because, well... why not? Actually, don't bother. I liked it when I was a kid, but it definitely doesn't hold up now.

Some Jonny Depp crap .... reasonably watchable on a rainy afternoon .. no idea what the fuck is going on though.

paranormal activity 3
way more enjoyable than 1 and 2, but still not a very good movie. the best part of the whole experience went something like this:
*camera pans to the kitchen showing a woman on the phone. she leaves. camera pans to the living room/entrance and back to the kitchen where everything is now gone*
destany: where did the phone go?
liz and i: where did the kitchen go?
and then everything crashes to the floor and we died of laughter.

Tucker And Dale Vs Evil (2010)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1465522/
Unbelievable it was JustLurkin that made me look at the review for this.
Looking at the DVD cover it looks like a load of B movie blood and gore shite ... Looking at the reviews you think, "yeah yeah ... fucking B movie fanboys".
It was great ... thoroughly enjoyed it. 7.7/10. .... best movie I've seen in weeks.
Tonight's Movie: Moonwalker
Somehow, I never saw this before tonight. Just as well... shouldn't have bothered watching it, ever.

You're amazing. It's like you fell down a cheap DVD bin for the 80's middle class.
Meh, I watch movies from the 30's all through the present. Unfortunately, somewhere along the line I got a glut of bad horror that I'm trying to work through, and I have to mix it in with some of the other stuff to avoid going mad.
That said, yesterday's movie was more influenced by the other half's taste in movies. Gotta keep her entertained too.

I find watching old films is monumentally disappointing and nowhere near as good as I remember them.
I loved the Hellraiser films ..... watching them now is like watching Gremlins.
I've only watched the first Hellraiser. It wasn't bad, but I actually preferred Gremlins.
But I still absolutely love the old Marx Brothers movies, for example. And watching all these random old movies, I've found some real gems that I otherwise never would have watched, or even heard of.

Tonight's movie: Blade Runner
Because I was in the mood for something good, and the other half hadn't seen it yet.

which version? this is important.
Tonight's was the US Theatrical.
I've got another copy somewhere around here, not sure which version it is.

Original US Theatrical? I thought they burned all those copies.
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
A very good adaption of the book. Noomi Rapace gives a stellar performance as Lisbeth Salander. For a Swedish film, it surprised me. I only hope the American version can match it, though I fear a Hollywood treatment will fuck it up.
The American version is quite good but the original is better perhaps for just being first. I was constantly comparing scenes. But it's well cast and hard to go wrong with Fincher at the helm.
It does move at a jumper pace and the love affair dealt with differently. Worth watching for the opening credits and torture scene set to Enya's
Should be noted Rooney Mara did great job filling some big shoes. She has a bigger future ahead.
edit: here's the opening
I only saw the original... I didn't really care for it enough to watch another version.

There is a pretty fatal flaw in the story which annoys me in both versions:
[spoiler]
Tonight's movie: Without a Clue
Sherlock's an idiot, and Watson's the real brains... always good for a laugh. A quality cast made this much more enjoyable than it otherwise would have been.

I thought Machete was shite. I managed 15 minutes before turning it off.
It's supposed to be shite, but you're also supposed to see why it's good shite.
Tonight's movie: 1984
Iconic, yes. But it just didn't feel convincing. Maybe I'll look into one of the other versions.

Tonight's movie: The Rocketeer
Another great movie I somehow missed when I was younger. Really well made movie.

I just watched Haywire. It is exactly what you would expect from a girl who can't act, yet has a background in MMA. Would watch again.
Drive
it was like someone edited a Fast and Furious movie into an 80s pastiche art-house flick. Overall, it had some good moments, but kind of felt like a fairly short story stretched to 100 minutes. The Cliff Martinez soundtrack was fine, but the actual songs used were terrible, so I'm wondering which part of the soundtrack was getting the acclaim...
also, Ryan Gosling + Scorpion jacket = Karate Kid villain
edit: something like this does make me long for when movie posters/boxart were their own separate work of art.
drive
Tonight's movie: One Day
I guess I liked it better than Karen did. The accent wasn't so bad as to be distracting, but I maybe I just ignore that sort of thing.

Drive
you're pretty much an asshole if you cant enjoy it
it wasn't bad, it just felt like a film that went through a dramatic recut after shooting.
the songs in the film were downright terrible though.
Not only were the songs terrible, but by the end of the movie, I was convinced it was just the same abysmal song repeated until I wanted to do violence.
Ryan Gosling...the pronounciation of that fishhead's lastname makes a gagging sound come of my throat, pretty much like his pop eyed face does.
Every movie, starring him as lead actor, cracked me up for the worst.
"A dangerous Method"
Was neat. Good movie, if you're interested in the subject, few attainments regarding this subject would definitely help to enjoy the movie. 7.5 / 10.
"Mst3k - The Magic Sword!"
cheap sword and sorcery flick, not the best episode, but good enough. I rate it a 6 / 10. You can find this at youtube.
A Dangerous Method's on my list to watch. Sounds interesting.

Hop-along Cassidy. Bow and arrow. Very Weird

Tonight's movie: Used Cars
Kurt Russell as a slimeball salesman. How can you go wrong?

continuing Gosling week: The Ides of March
eh, felt like it was missing 20 minutes on the end. I rate it 3/6 Ryan Gosling abs.

Shame. Lots of emotion and suggestion. Lots of unsexy sex. It was interesting but ultimately insubstantial.
"Limits of Control"
Hm, I'm ambivalent towards Jarmusch.
While I hated Ghostdog and dead man, I immediatly fell in Love with Broken Flowers.
Like his silent psychodelic-trip movies, so I thought LoC would be suited, but gnaaaaaa.
I didn't watch it to the end, I found it unbearably boring. But I may would have like it, if I was in another mood...so no rating, yet.
I agree you need to be in a proper mood to watch it. Spain looks fantastic though.
I really liked Ghost Dog and Dead Man, but I haven't seen Broken Flowers - it looks so dusty.
Only one of those I've seen is Broken Flowers. I wasn't impressed.

It's highly mood and attitude depending.
Broken Flowers:
A Guy (Bill Murray) gets a pink letter, which tells him of an offspring he once made and didn't know of. It didn't give names.
So Bill's taking a journey through rural America to visit every ex he once had, to check out on them.
That's basically all what happens...very quite, a little bizarre..
I like to compare it to Lost in translation (Bill Murray!), which is the 2nd Love-relationship related Movie, next to Broken Flowers, I can watch without throwing up or feeling intellectually insultet.
I can comprehend if somebody thinks is shit, though...I like it.
I loved Lost in Translation. I actually watched Broken Flowers hoping for something like that. I think that's probably why I was let down.
It wasn't bad, just not really something I'd watch again.

Well, both movies are quite subtile and let the pictures speak for their own.
But after all, broken flowers is still a JJ.
His pictures have their own asthetics, quite existential.
deadman is awesome... "who the hell are you and where did you get that goddamn clown suit? cleavland?"
Tonight's movie: Frenzy
Excellent movie by Alfred Hitchcock. Worth a watch, even if just for the scenes of the inspector's wife's cooking.

Everyone should see the new Conan movie because it will make every movie you see afterward seem superb.
Super. Tied with Hobo for most over-the-top violence. Ellen Page was terrific. Rainn Wilson does an amazing impression of a block of wood.

I grew up watching cowboy movies and shows thanks to my grandfather. It was the only kind of pictures he really enjoyed. It's scary how many reruns of Bonanza, Rawhide, Wagon Train, The Lone Ranger, The Rifleman, Have Gun Will Travel, Gunsmoke, Maverick, ect I watched growing up. The only two he seemed to dislike was Kung Fu and Wild Wild West which is a shame. As for actual cowboy movies it would be in the hundreds. Damn you early 80's TBS.
TT may be hinting at the fact that his generation was forever marked by the epic ending of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
It's like saying First Blood would have been better if John Rambo wasn't kind of a moron.
You should read the book. Much better than the film with a wildly different story.
A new twist is Blackthorn.
I'm just saying that there was a period in the latter half that felt slower than the pacing of the rest of the movie. If that's the worst thing I could come up with, it's a pretty good movie.

Tonight's movie: Forbidden Planet
Surprisingly good for a 1956 sci-fi movie. It's also very weird to see Leslie Nielsen young.

Forbidden Planet was awesome! It's one of the best Sci-Fi movies ever.
Todays film was the Lincoln Lawyer
Pretty good. worth a watch. 6.8/10

The remake was announced a couple years back but i think they've been having finical problems. Expect it next year (if at all: the buzz has really dried up), it's written directed by the creator of Babylon 5 and rumored to star Liam Nesson.

Tonight's movie: They Live
Interesting idea, with a decent message, yet it didn't take itself too seriously. It's got its flaws, but it's also got Rowdy Roddy Piper!

Another classic, Rosh. Your on a roll. They Live is worth watching just for the five and a half minute long fight scene between friends.
Hesher 2010
Reasonably watchable 6.6/10.
Tonight's movie: Strangers on a Train
Classic Hitchcock... but the best part is the merry-go-round of death.

Yeah, awesome climax.
Allegedly the old man crawling under was indeed in extreme, actual danger. And that's why movies will never be as good today.
Waltz with Bashir
It's a fine movie. I regret to not have seen it earlier.
Next to the honorable Anti-War-Message, sophisticated people like us won't miss, I have to say it has some pretty gruesome and fine War animations going on.
Giving it a 8 / 10 ....just because 9+ is reserved for Bill Murray flicks.
Tonight's movie: Meatballs
Speaking of Bill Murray flicks... Always a fun movie. Ended up watching it tonight because the other half was in the mood for it.

Angel Heart 7 / 10
Who would have thought that?! - First time watch and I immediately got hooked. What a good, old, solid movie.
I wasn't sure about that flick, since I feared it could be too surreal in a annoying David Lynch "No, it's not art you pretentious fag" -way.
Pleasently suprised!
Bill Murray is awesome. Speaking of Bill Murray flicks makes wanna watch "Ed Wood" tonight, followed by a mst3k-episode featuring a real ed wood movie.
I can't think of a bad movie with Satan in it.

the only other Luc Besson I can think of, off hand, where a young girls parents are killed is "Leon". Is that consider "a thing"? you might have to refresh my memory did parents die in "Arthur and the Invisables"?
Did Nikita or Milla in 5th have parents? If he doesn't kill them off, they don't seem to have any to begin with. He also likes his women kicking ass in not much more than bandages. Interesting guy.
Adèle Blanc-Sec is a nice heroine. Can't remember if her parents are mentioned, but she did gravely wound her sister.

much better than I thought it would be, especially for a movie that isn't even 90 minutes. I'm also surprised it's taken almost a decade for Hollywood to cash in on the fake documentary thing.
"Found footage" is the fastest growing "genre" in film atm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Found_footage_(genre)
definitely. I'm just surprised it's taken so long. Blair Witch Project was a smash in the late 90s, but there was no real attempt to cash in on that outside of a lame sequel that didn't use the "found footage" formula.
I would guess that the major studios figured something like Blair Witch Project was a one trick pony believing that what audiences really wanted in the past 10 years was high concept big flashy budget movies full of CGI. But once "Paranormal Activity" did it not once but 3 times all with a insanely small budget and making triple figure millions, there is no way that can continue to not see it as the cash cow. Not only is there going to be about 8 movies this year (and TV shows) and about 10 next year in this style I've personally seen dozens of screenplays monthly with them dominating the spec sales.
edit: dozens monthly is pure exaggeration

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

Safe House had more twists than a bucket of Twizzlers. I saw it with three others and was the only one who understood what had transpired. Is it ADD in the adults of America or was the plot confusing? I am not sure, but it was not as convoluted as Syriana.

I thought it was intense and riveting at times.[spoiler] It's annoying to have to explain the plot of the movie I just saw to the people I saw it with, though.
Also, I'm starting to like Ryan Reynolds. Not sure what happened. I think I'm going soft in the head with age.
Ryan Reynolds is pretty great when cast right.
Safe House is a script I read last year and didn't have much interest in but it's getting some great feedback. They must have reworked some of the plot holes or made it so thrilling no one cared. I'll still likely wait for it before dropping $12. (yes the prices here for a single showing of new releases has gone up by $2 add another $4 for 3D)
why has the cinema market been in decline for the last decade? Right, pirates ARRR! (who is really stealing your money?)
It hasn't taken Hollywood nearly that long (re: Cloverfield) but I really want to see Chronicle, I hear only good things.
To See Ryan Reynolds act is a greater pain in the urethra than watching a marathon of Lady Di's, Michael Jackson's and Whitney Houston's memorial ceremonies together.
Saying he's great is definitely a case of unexcusable dumbfuckerithis -solidarity going on between Canadians.
The Film was pretty lame. I guess Hollywood uses these unchallenging, awful story twists to tell us "Sorry guys our recent movies stink like ass...we absolutely ran out of ideas, yeah...that's true...better go watch something more original".
But some people like being dispatched by the always same story, with it's either predictable or just completely stupid twists.
All new movies I saw had that fusty smell of something decomposing sticking on them...

I'll never disturb these saskatchewan-gay-boundries again, promise.
But calling Ryan Reynolds a pretty great actor seems pretty kafkaesque.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1596350/
I gave it 2/5 stars in my review. Mostly because the guys were really hot, aside from that it fell completely flat and oh so lame.
If anyone does watch it, look out for Reese Witherspoon dancing in a t-shirt and underwear. Personally, I think the t-shirt should have been shorter / not present. Either way works.
I just watched American History X for the second time. It has more punch as an adult than it had at age 16. That is all.
Tonight's movie: The Thing
This was the 2011 remake/prequel. Not quite as good as the original, but still quite decent.

Tonight's movie: M*A*S*H
Because the other half had never seen it. The first 30-45 minutes were a lot slower than I remembered, but it seems to hit its stride about halfway through and keeps it going the rest of the way.

Rakht Charitra , a Bollywood flic whose title translates as "Bloody Vengeance".
Quite enjoyable. Lots of knife and machete work, beheading, shootings, immolations. Best of all, it is mostly true.
Sanctum.
Spelunking horror with a terrible script that makes bad actors do random stupid stuff, but some OK cave scenes. 5/10
The Mechanic
Pretty good for what would've been an 80s action cheesefest.
Being the hipster that you are, I'd have thought you would watched the original.
Alien
11/10
it's rather amazing how well this movie holds up. I think it's the lack of CGI and that the main characters' jobs are basically doing grunt work rather than living in the a-typical Sci-Fi utopia where everyone is a superhero of sorts.
Yeah, still love Alien.
Tonight's movie: Ghost Rider
Basically, we were planning on seeing the new one tomorrow, and the other half hadn't seen the first one. It was a little better than I remembered, but mostly because of Sam Elliott. Still not as good as most of the other recent movies based on Marvel comics, but passably watchable. I'm hoping they've learned more from their experience and improved the sequel. Probably not.

War horse
What to say about this movie?
An underwhelmingly stupid 'n cheesy story, too much horse-sensitivity; 1-dimensional characters (if they have a dimension at all) and absolutely no suprises from beginning to the end....but some nice cinematographics and several good shots.
War scenes are decent, but don't expect a ww1 private ryan, it's more a child movie, but spielberg's just too experienced with the big-screen to not deliver some neat pictures.
5 / 10
more like Bore Horse
but it did look nice, guess it deserved the cinematography nomination
What's Your Number?
Much like Bridesmaids, it starts out as a farce on RomComs, but kind of devolves into an actual RomCom by the end of the film. Not bad otherwise.
If it wasn't for the extreme likability of Anna Faris there would be a lot of movies I'd have skipped.
Today's movie: Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance
The visual effects are much, much better. Plenty of action, story is so-so. There are funny moments, but they kinda feel out of place. And Nicolas Cage plays Ghost Rider as more... quirky than the previous movie. He could easily have been playing a junky or schizophrenic half the time. Actually, the whole movie kinda feels schizophrenic.
Overall, it's an improvement over the first one, but I think maybe they should've gone with a different director.

For the most part, I've stopped going to 3D movies. I just catch the one or two showings that aren't 3D.

Finally saw Chronicle. Liked it.
shit, now no one will believe me when I say Chronicle was better than expected
chillerama
i enjoyed it

Which means everyone else will hate it.
Tonight's movie: Willy/Milly
Ahh.. 80's gender-bending fun. Very odd movie. Has its moments, but not exactly good. Interesting to watch if for no other reason than a very young Seth Green.

Thanks for the tip Rosh. Not often someone posts something here I have yet to "revel in". seems there's a VHS rip available that I just might have to take a look at.
edit: I wanted to ask where or how you saw it? Netflix? VHS? Download? there does not appear to be a DVD of it
VHS Rip. I'd never heard of it either till I got it.

Tonight's movie: Rustler's Rhapsody
Basically it's a spoof of the old 40's/50's westerns. Lots of fun.

Midnight in Paris
not bad. Kind of odd to have people refer to each other by their last names the entire time.
never been a big Woody Allen fan and Midnight in Paris won't be changing my mind. i suspect it will win Best Screenplay at the Oscars this Sunday

But at least on Seinfeld (not familiar with Curb), it was just one character. In the movie, it was pretty much every single character on any given instance even if they were named earlier in the movie. It comes off as passive-agressive assholish to me.
what about Newman? he's frequently playing. I see a scheme here..
I guess that would make sense for Newman. They didn't know Kramer's first name until later on as well.

Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star
it's not nice that Adam Sandler pawns off his worst ideas onto his friends. It was pretty bad overall, yet it kind of seems like they went "Oh shit, forgot to write an ending!" for the last 15 minutes. The number of fake-porn titles in the movie that had the word "Smell" or "Stink" in the title was odd as well.

Alright, but you're better off watching The Edge starring Anthony Hopkins. 6.4/10
Tonight's movie: The Mouse That Roared
Brilliant concept, and well executed. Very funny movie.

Thanks, Rosh, for reminding me of that movie. Saw it as a small child and loved it. It's going on my list.

Wow, wouldn't have guessed that, CRSR. I only recognized John Glover and Seth Green. Of course, I haven't seen Californication, so I guess I wouldn't have much chance.

Gone (2012)
I watched this last night. Most of the reviews I've looked at do not treat it kindly. Well, that's a strong hint it could be a dang good movie.
I liked Gone. I'm a[spoiler]
Not that that has anything to do with Gone.
Amen.
Tonight's movie: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
I think it was a good story, and well acted, but it was... really hard to follow. It seemed to jump all over the place, often without enough context to place a given scene in the overall narrative.
That made it for a very disjointed watching experience. It's a pity, because otherwise this probably would've been a very memorable movie.

I agree completely Rosh. I really really wanted to enjoy it more. Gary Oldman is as always great.
People, mostly the brits, recommend the 1979 version as well.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080297/
I've yet to watch it but they say it's easier to follow. Also there is always the Books.
Chronicle was entertaining, but I probably didn't like it as well as travis.
Tower Heist
not bad. Kind of advertised as a more comedic film.
quote:I was gonna look into the 1979 one, but I noticed it's a miniseries. I think I'd have a hard time selling the other half on that one. I've got a couple two-part miniseries that I haven't been able to watch.

Tonight's movie: The Invention of Lying
It was funny, though I think it goes a little overboard. And that's even after I get past the Liar-Liar style "can't lie means you have to say everything on your mind" logic.
Favorite part was the ad for Pepsi, "When they don't have Coke."

I watched that. I thought it was amusing in parts and schmaltzy in others. I like Ricky Gervais -- that must be the gentlest he's ever been on-screen.
Tonight's movie: The Other Guys
As recommended. It's funny, but way too random. Of course, I'm still not a big fan of Will Ferrell (with the notable exception of Stranger than Fiction). Still, it had its moments.

Other Guys felt like a 50 minute movie stretched to 2 hours. Stepbrothers is Will Ferrell's crowning achievment.

Supposedly the biggest box office movie ever in New Zealand.
Great acting by a couple of kids, otherwise much ado about nothing, despite all the supposed accolades.
new zealand has a box office?
well there is an office with some boxes

Tonight's movie: Beastly
Kind of ironic that the movie uses the term "embrace the suck" early on.
Neil Patrick Harris made it less bad, but really, there's no salvaging this piece of shit.

Kill the Irishman
Jeeze, if we're going to glorify criminals, let's pick ones with personalities.

Vanessa Hudgens needs to go back to her winning formula for drumming up interest in her films. You know, the bit where her cellphone gets 'hacked' and somehow spills out mirror nudes but not anybody's phone number or text messages, right after the first trailer gets released. It worked well enough a couple times, keep at it!
Tonight's movie: Nineteen Eighty-Four
This is the 1984 version. I think it was better, but I like the image of Big Brother from the old one better. This one just looks creepy, and not in a "that's how it's supposed to look" way.

the Thing (2011)
it was okay. It wasn't a pseudo-remake like the scenes I saw made it look like, but it isn't terribly different from Carpenter's version. Carpenter's version also had better effects,
Then why would I want to see it? If it were superior to Carpenter or had an interesting spin of some kind, maybe, but from everything said about it, I haven't yet heard an argument for watching it.
because it cost $1 at redbox...
That's $1 better spent on chocolate.
Overall, I felt that the original Thing was much better. The remake wasn't all bad, though. Just not anything special.

Tonight's movie: Team America: World Police
Because the other half hadn't seen it, and, well... sometimes you just need stupid funny. I still think half the genius of the movie was the music.

I just watched this:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1482459/
Can't say it was great, or it sucked. It was sweet, adorable and colorful.
bleh, the Lorax looks terrible. It looks like they hid a relevant plotline behind a whole bunch of typical Dreamworks awfulness.
Tonight's movie: Pee-Wee's Big Adventure
It's kind of amazing how I hadn't realized this was a Tim Burton movie until a few years ago. In retrospect, it's quite obvious. But I guess last time I saw it, I was a kid, so I had no idea.

We're watching Insidious. Creepy so far.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Went to dinner at some friends house, then 8 of us went to a local theater for a 10 pm showing. Still a very funny movie.
The Troll Hunter
It's good alright. Only lacks some black metal. 7.5/10
Tonight's movie: Aquamarine
Cheesy teen movies are something of a guilty pleasure. Unfortunately, they're also rather hit or miss... this one was definitely a miss.

Insidious was just OK. It needed more dark humor. It was creepy and well-filmed, but also cheesy and derivative. Still kinda fun.
Tonight's movie: The Seven Year Itch
Not really all that funny. It has a few good moments, but for the most part it was actually kind of boring. Oh well.

Just watched the trailer. Where they making light of adultery?
I'm appalled. And Monroe was being too stupid wtf?
HUGO.
It was rather good but I really didn't think it deserved as many Oscars as it gotten. I mean it won in Animation or some shit. The other contenders that were nominated ran circles around it.
Overall I'll give it an 87 with the go watch it tag when the DVD comes out.
best worst movie
the cast of troll 2 reunite and talk about being in what is considered the worst movie of all time. everyone except the director and writer of troll 2 have a good sense of humor about their movie becoming a cult classic and apparently margo prey went insane.

Drummer and I enjoyed that movie. I think I posted about it a while back.
Moneyball
Brad Pitt is a good actor. The fat guy wasn't bad either. I enjoyed this despite the fact baseball is boring.
My Week with Marilyn
Michelle Williams was good as Marilyn, Branaugh a little campy as Olivier.
Enjoyable.
Tonight's movie: Being John Malkovich
This remains one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen. Still quite funny and enjoyable, though. Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich!

Modus Operandi. Poor editing, directing, and acting, crappy film quality, weird stock footage from the '70s, and lots of gratuitous nudity. I kept expecting it to turn into a porn flick. If you're a grindhouse fan, you'll probably enjoy it. Carnage and random pussy-shaving, too.
My heart cries when someone's love for Being John Malkovich is not completely unconditional.

I'm not a huge fan of Meg Ryan, but I am a fan of Mark Ruffalo. Although it had it's slow moments it was a pretty good movie.
Tonight's movie: The Call of Cthulhu
A modern silent movie! Definitely captures the feel of the old silent films, and also the original story. Not really impressed by the claymation Cthulhu, but I guess it fit the overall look of the film.

I'm looking forward to The Whisperer in Darkness: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1498878/
thanks for the tip Coincidence grabbing it now.
I watched Woman in Black last night and really liked it. Gave it a 4/5 for our publication review.
The movie opened pretty late here, like a month after its release there, I think. I really enjoyed the scares in this one, and that harry potter guy has some acting chops. Pretty cool movie, overall
The Artist.
Realizing why this had to be best picture.
It made me want to dive into watching old movies it really does.

Polanski combines thriller with car commercial. At the end I just wanted to snuggle up in a BMW suv. Besides that, I guess it's alright for a massive dose of Tony Blair hate. Ewan McGregor: Overrated. 7/10

It was certainly better than expected. It's heavy on the Shock factor but I admit that the tension and tone set through out the film really made those moments pay off. I jumped a few times and found myself chuckling with nervous laughter after one scene, in which soon afterwards I had to make sure no one was behind me.
It reminded me of Mario Bava's work in horror. He too liked to put people looking mysteriously from windows. Glimpses in mirrors. and he certainly also thought children were creepy as fuck.
I'd be interested to see how this worked as a stage play.
Did anyone have the pleasure to watch "Twixt"?

it's a new coppola movie and completely passed me by.
Silent House (2011)
Not many critics liked this flick, which is probably a good thing. Frankly, it was a lot better than I thought it would be. That's due in part because it wasn't what I expected, i.e., Blair Witch Project crap. Here's a link. I give it 3.22 outta 4.00 Freds.
Amen.
Tonight's movie: The Colour of Magic (OK, miniseries, not movie. Close enough.)
Just awesome. I love the books, and this did a good job of capturing the feel of them, even if it didn't follow them perfectly. Actually, I've enjoyed all of the recent Discworld miniseries.

I think the other half enjoyed this one more than Going Postal. I'll have to show her the Hogfather before long.

Tonight's movie: The Name of the Rose
It starts out slow, almost to the point where I wanted to just give up on it, but it does get better. It lays out a nice murder mystery in the backdrop of the inquisition-era Catholic monastery. And apparently the filmmaker wanted to showcase the fact that the church was the predecessor to the more modern freak shows.

planet terror
i enjoyed it way more than the other half did.

I'm Still Here.
WHY AM I WATCHING THIS?/10
Tonight's movie: Dylan Dog: Dead of Night
A non-angsty werewolf/vampire/zombie movie without anything sparkling. Overall, the movie's a lot of fun. Better than I expected.

I should note, however, that I'd never even heard of the comic before watching the movie, so I can't speak on that point. Apparently it's a terrible adaptation of the source material. Watching it without any background, however, I stand by my original opinion.

ha so true
worst time for the adaption or terrible time?
Young Adult
advertised as a more comedic film, but it was still pretty good.
Charlize Theron is South African, therefore Avondale is best friends with her.
May

It wasn't fabulous, but it was interesting. A definite watch.
I like weird.

Tonight's movie: Go
So, this was a random pick - it was mislabeled, so I had no idea what it was gonna be till I played it. Turned out well. Incredibly strange movie, and yet strangely compelling and entertaining.

I used to own that back when it made sense to own VHS tapes. I never found it all that odd.
Maybe just it's because I had no idea what it was about before watching it. And it just seemed that everyone did stupid shit that didn't make a lot of sense.

Drugs.
Well yeah. But I guess it felt different even from other druggy movies.

Tonight's movie: Black Knight
Stupid movie. It has funny moments, but for the most part, I really don't see how Martin Lawrence ever had a career. That, and I spent half the movie trying to place Tom Wilkinson.

Tron: Legacy
Alternating between cringing from the story and marveling at the visuals. 5.5/10
You need to watch it on an iPad 3.
Tonight's movie: Golgo 13
This is the live action version, in spite of what it looks like on imdb. It's actually pretty good. A little slow, but entertaining and they did a good job of portraying the character faithfully. Bad ass, but always professional, hit man. None of that heart of gold bullshit.

Screened Elysium last night on the Sony lot...
It's a Matt Damon / Jodie Foster flick from the guy that directed District 9. Not slated for release until ~ March '13.
I signed a NDA and am not supposed to talk about it.
So instead I will talk about District 9. The last movie from the same director. It was preachy. On the nose. Not as fun as it tried to be. Trite. And it had some plot holes. Same director. New movie.
On an unrelated note, I tend to subscribe to the theory that good directors make pretty good movies most of the time. Bad directors make pretty bad movies most of the time.
Hmm.
What if I loved District 9?
Also, why are you racist?
If you loved District 9, that's great! A lot of people loved The Sixth Sense.
Also, I'm not racist, I'm big boned.
Tonight's movie: Burlesque
Because I wanted to see an overweight diva and an over-the-hill diva try to act. Why was this movie made?
Even putting that aside, it felt like an hour and a half movie stretched out to two hours. Even Stanley Tucci couldn't save this, though he did a damn good job trying.

I watched Meek's Cutoff the other day. It's a decent film and one of the few in recent times about the Oregon Trail. Essentially a group pf pioneers gets lost in the 1849 Cascade Mountains and deal with a shortage of water. That's the entire flick but it's worth a peek.
7 out of ten because it's about my second favorite state.

Tonight's movie: What's Your Number?
Good for what it is: A predictable, formulaic romantic comedy. Nothing special, but it had a lot of funny parts, and Anna Faris was charming.

Sleeping Beauty with Emily Browning
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1588398/
The ending really was truly disappointing. The rest of the movie was slow, dry and pretty draggy. I don't think many would survive through this without shutting it off half way. It's not really porn, though the trailer might suggest it heh. I had a hard time trying to understand the show too.
The Sitter with Jonnah Hill.
Don't know why there's been so much hate for this movie. I quite liked it, it was fun to watch, and clearly was a recycled story, still some parts were funny.
I tried to watch Tower Heist. After 15 minutes I said "Fuck this," and shut it off.

What an excellent movie, unlike the shit you posted here the last couple of weeks.
9 / 10
Tonight's movie: Children of Men
So... feel good movie of the year.
I'm kinda torn on this movie... good story, and engaging, but it just really bummed me out throughout the movie. And of course, predictable ending.

The part of Children of Men that bothered me the most was when Cain's character killed his wife and then went outside to be murdered. I haven't been able to hear Ruby Tuesday since without thinking of it.
Surely the predictable ending would have been some gang of cannibals feasting on the pregnant mother.
Children of Men struck me as unintentionally goofy and tried too hard to be taken seriously.
OK, that's pretty funny coming from you.
Yea they should have had Barney the purple dinosaur getting killed.
That would have made more sense.
"The Iron Lady"
Besides the whole "Oh, look - I'm a woman, I have handbags, tits and dresses!" -bullshit, we got a lot of sheer meryl streepness there including a supposed 80 y.o. meryl, wearing a latex-mask and defining a new category of ridiculous overacting.
There's also a very fine written, subtile script...giving us populistic feminism lines like:" There's never gonna be a female prime minister in GB; not HERE, not in GB!"
..when the fine gentlemen asks himself "what is she insinuating?
That Gb, along with austria, russia and maybe egypt has already experienced serious female-leadership in it's history?
That, 1979, GB was behind all the other ultra-liberal nations, who featured female head of states at that time?
Or was she hinting at the bigger brother, land of the free, who, in 2012, still didn't manage to get a woman anywhere else than UNDER the president's desk?
That's a farce, a boldly dumb, tendentious fuckmovie and it doesn't even feature B-movie action stars and explosions. I'm sure women love it though.
4 /10
Tonight's movie: Gui ma tian shi (aka Drunken Wu Tang)
It's a stupid movie, and the subtitles on my copy were absolute crap, which made it a little hard to follow. However, it's funny as hell, with some decent (over the top) kung fu scenes.

Comic book movie week.
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Should have been titled, Rise of the Cliches, as it's chock full of them. Bleh.
And could Ioan Gruffudd sound any weenier? It sounded like he was inhaling helium most of the time.
Green Lantern
Slightly better than FFRotSS, but still pretty clunky.
Where along the line did comic book writers decide a teeny little mask would keep people from figuring out who the superheroes are?
Although the Superman/Clark Kent deal was the worst of all.
Captain America
The most entertaining of the lot and at least they kept him out of spandex.

Tonight's movie: Enemy Mine
I enjoyed this a fair bit. For the most part they did a pretty decent job of making humanoid aliens still seem alien, though they've still got a lot of human traits. It does have the same preachy "human invaders are bad" message as Avatar, but the basic story felt a little more natural (but still far from original).

Read the novella, it's a great story. I'm pretty sure it's a takeoff of an old Lee Marvin film.
Yep, Hell in the Pacific.
That's the one. Good flick.
Internal Affairs.
Wow. Not sure I'd even heard of this movie.
Richard Gere and Andy Garcia's best work, by far. Billy Baldwin's too, but that really isn't saying much.
I recommend watching it on Netflix Instant immediately.
Tonight's movie: Attack the Block
One of the better alien invasion movies I've seen in a while. Can't say as I like the lead character though, even if they do try to make him seem better by the end.

I just thought it was funny.
There was that too.

The Muppets
re-watching since someone ([spoiler] ) was acting up during the theatrical viewing.
The Hunger Games
We are talking minimal things taken out from the book.
From a movie standpoint it's pretty spot on.
Awesome.
100
Tonight's movie: A Good Old Fashioned Orgy
Not as funny as it looked, and not as dirty as it sounded. But still decently watchable.

A Dangerous Method. I learned that S&M is hot and Keira Knightley's acting has improved dramatically (hyuk) since Domino.
It alternated between enjoyable and insufferable, though that may have been the personalities of Freud and Jung shining through rather than any fault of the actors.
Carnage
pretty good even though they forgot to write an ending.
HA.
It was felt like the writer, after noticing his page count was just "Well this is as good a place as any..." - The End
that's pretty much what I thought as well. Then they showed a playground scene (why is Roman Polanski filming a playground?) which i guess implied the kids became friends or something...

Act Of Valor
Aside from the fact this is a propaganda film designed to scare the holy fuck out of Americans to submit to airport screenings and whatever the fuck else we need to do and that they portrayed Filipino's as little terrorists people and the main character dies in the end and the funeral and the proud and the leave the note to Junior so he too may never forget some of the action scenes were pretty killer.
Overall an 81.
The Hunger Games (2012)
I saw The Hunger Games this past weekend. It was pretty good, but nothin' WOW. Perhaps I would've liked it more if it hadn't been hyped so much. Or, perhaps I'm just a contrarian and don't know it. Here's a link. I give it 3.39 outta 4.00 movie Freds.
Amen.
I saw The Hunger Games. It was faithful to the book.
Hunger Games[spoiler] It's more enjoyable I think after reading the book because the book gave more details to who everyone is.
Read a book, become annoying. Another dictum you have distilled down to its basic components.
NOU
Tonight's movie: Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Decent movie. Would have been better without jumping around the whole time. Totally unnecessary and breaks the narrative flow without adding anything to the film.

Hopping on the Hunger Games bandwagon here. I think I'd have enjoyed the movie more if I hadn't read the books. But maybe not. That startle moment near the end actually dragged a scream out of the woman sitting behind me. Weird.
startle moment?..... just watched dont remember that
When the first dog thing jumped out of nowhere. The scream was more startling than the movie.
Tonight's movie: Drive
Not really impressed. Felt slow and quirky at first, suddenly brutal in the middle, and then just disappointing at the end. And the music quickly got repetitive and annoying.

We saw Tower Heist. It wasn't as terrible as I'd feared, just wildly, absurdly impossible.

Yeah, I'm fairly certain that's why the drummer and I wanted to watch it. Still, zip, nada, nil.

Tonight's movie: Natural Born Killers
I've tried watching this before, but couldn't make it through the opening credits. I made it through the movie this time, but I still wasn't impressed. It wasn't bad, but I think it was seriously overrated.

Intruders (2011)
I like Clive Owen as an actor, Intruders only got 5.5 on the IMDb, but they're just wrong. 6.9
Game Change
I thought it was kind of odd that they made a whole movie out of 2/5s of a book, though it is the more interesting portion. (The other 3/5s involves Obama vs. Hillary (and to a lesser extent John Edwards)).
Otherwise, pretty spot-on performance of Julianne Moore on Sarah Palin. Some say it paints Palin in a more positive light in that she was a victim of poor planning on McCain's campaign. I kind of agree and it does make her more sympathetic in her relationship with her family, but since she came out swinging right off the bat and was obviously oblivious to her limitations, I can assure you I am only crying crocodile tears over her ignorance and unpreparedness.

One half always told me "haven't you seen enough kids cheesely been killed over the last 90 minutes?" and the other one replied "have you ever?".
Although I lol'ed quite alot in the beginning, I think it's 30 minutes too long.
Tonight's movie: Dawn of the Dragonslayer
Not as bad as I expected with a 3.5 imdb rating. Acting wasn't anything special, but it's not really bad either. I like the dragon's design, but the rest of the CGI was pretty bad. The scenery was gorgeous. Overall, a mediocre, but watchable, dragon movie.

Unearthed.
Crap Alien/Tremors crap. If you want to see a really bad movie, go for this and you will not be disappointed.
In the extras it appears they have made a kickass animatronics monster, but the one in the movie is some kind of CGI used for Jason and the Argonauts.
Btw, is a movie racist if the only racist guy in the movie is the black guy?
0.8/10
The Changeling (1980)
Excellente ghost movie a la The Orphanage. Warning: Protagonist is old, rational man. 8/10
The Grey
Hated the ending.
It was like watching a lifetime special.
70.
Tonight's movie: Down Periscope
An underrated classic. Always fun to watch.

Midnight in Paris (2011)
I watched this Woody Allen film early today. I had no desire to see it when it hit the box office. I'm glad to report, though, that I really enjoyed it. If you will suspend your disbelief and relax, you may very well enjoy it, too. Here's a link. I give it 3.88 outta 4.00 movie Freds.

Young Adult wasn't bad. I thought it had its comic moments and I enjoyed Charlize Theron. Maybe it helps to be farther away from that age of adultolescence and well into adulthood.
I, too, enjoyed The Perfect Host. David Hyde Pierce was entertaining.
I liked Young Adult, too.
The character-drawing was pretty flat sprinkled with lots of unreflected stereotypes but it had a good base-story, also the acting kept me hooked.
Hey, I didn't say Dawn of the Dragonslayer was good, but it wasn't nearly as bad as you're making it out to be. I've seen far, far worse. But hey, to each their own.
I really liked Midnight in Paris.
Young Adult I've already talked about.

Tonight's movie: 12 Angry Men
Somehow I never saw it before now. Very good movie.

I know we never determinated the actual range of "bad", but to define my perception of bad movies: "the dragonslayer" was pretty, pretty, pretty near the very bottom of bad.
My Last Movie: "Jabberwocky" (1977)
awesome. Never saw it before, arguably not the best monthy python movie, but I got some pretty great laughts out of it.
can't rate it though, classics are to be watched not rated.
couldn't hold myself here:
arguably not a "monthy" [or monty] python movie
it says monthy in german...Cpt. anal retentive.
either way Jabberwocky is not a Monty Python movie though as you state it was released in many countries as one even though Gilliam insisted it not be.
Yea, I noticed that it was actually a Gilliam movie not a python, after you mentioned it.
I just found it a little pedantic.
And of course...it's not 'Monthy' in german at all.
it's just an easy way to pull myself out of compromising typo situations.
Tonight's movie: How to be a Serial Killer
It's no American Psycho, but it's decent enough for what it is.

In preparation for Prometheus this summer, I am forcing my kids to watch the Alien movies with me.
Well, the first two Alien movies, anyway.
by which you mean the AvP movies, of which Prometheus is the sequel?
I thought Prometheus would be a prequel?
Uh oh.
I never saw any of the AvP flicks. After Alien 3, I swore I was done with the franchise. But I'm giddy as a school girl about Prometheus.
You were wise not to bother with Alien Resurrection. I didn't see the 2nd AvP either. I'm definitely excited for Prometheus.
You can definitely watch Alien: Resurrection if you need some B-movie fun. Obviously it fails as an Alien movie, but it succeeds as silly fan fiction.
Joss Whedon completionists need to see it too.
"fan Fiction" is a bit nice of a description as I'd wager it probably didn't even start out as Alien movie. Even if taken on its own terms, it's still a pretty bad movie if only because it didn't really acknowledge how cloning human tissue also allowed them to clone the Alien queen embryo and reimplant all of Ripley's memories.
Like, whatever, dude.
Oh god. Please stop piquing my interest.
Torrent it so you don't feel ripped off. Or you can get all the movies in a boxset for under $40.
Alien: Resurrection is decent fodder considering the cast is pretty enjoyable and it's directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet of Amelie fame.
Winona Ryder, Dominique Pinon, Ron Perlman and Brad Dourif (who's a pretty under-rated actor)
It's mostly ridiculous especially the human-hybrid but It actually set up for a good 5th movie that would have taken place on earth. I like it more than 3 which felt like a continuous slap in face.
Alien 3 did feel like an extended and unnecessary epilogue to Aliens that obviously went through many rewrites, but A:R just feels like it didn't start off as an Alien film and has the extra-added faceslap of not really even trying to explain why they're resuming the series after a rather definitive close to the previous installment.
3 went through so many re-writes it's unfunny. The first few seemed more promising it's hard to understand why they settled on the one they did. William Gibson even got paid to write one edit you can read it online here: http://home.online.no/~bhundlan/scr...ien3/gibson.htm
Killing off Hicks, Newt and Bishop was the dumbest idea obviously needed cuz Newt had aged. But and I always say not to look to other material, but in the comics Newt and Bishop have a love affair need I say more?
Tonight's movie: Good Advice
Pre-winning Sheen in a formulaic romantic comedy. Still, it had enough funny parts to be enjoyable.

I watched this on an assignment yesterday: http://ecentral.my/movies/movie.asp?id=2248
Oh god, so painful. Worst still, it was the uncut version. I was left emotionally limped right after. The choir performances still haunts me...
'on an assignment'
Aliens
I haven't seen this movie in about 15 years. I saw it when it came out in '86 without having seen Alien. I saw Alien in 2000 or so and instantly felt it had the better story, if not the better action.
Re-watching Aliens, it seems that I was right, and that the director was the difference. I could definitely sense Titanic brewing in Cameron's mind while he directed this movie.
All the more reason to be excited about Prometheus.
which version did you see?
I also feel ripped off whn i don't get the sentry gun scene.
There's a version without?

I guess. I just think it's a case of where the cut material was obviously cut for pacing reasons (it adds an extra 20 before they even arrive on LV-426, for one) or redundancy (Newt's family being sent out by W-Y to find the derelict ship is established elsewhere. The fact that it was Newt's family is more interesting than plot-relevant).
It's ultimately more interesting than it is an enhanced experience. It doesn't really add anything to the original movie other than over-explain itself. I thought the alternate cuts of Alien and, to a lesser extent, Alien 3 were more interesting.
Tonight's movie: Battle Royale
Because it came heavily recommended.
So... fucked up movie. Enjoyable enough. Still not interested in Hunger Games, though I'll probably eventually see it once it's on DVD.

is Battle Royale at all like The Hunger Games, or is it just assholes being obstinate? Reading the IMDb synopsis, I guess I could see why one might compare it to the other... but it also sounds like The Long Walk or The Running Man, etc.
Battle Royale is very Japanese. Hunger Games contained hope. Battle Royale, not so much. But the basic premise is the same. Dystopian future. Sacrifice the "innocents" for sport.
they are all based on "The Most Dangerous Game" so hipsters can suck it.
Eh, I won't disagree, but there are major differences. People often compare to Lord of the Flies, as well. I'd say closer to Lord of the Flies than Most Dangerous Game, so you can suck it.
Someone is going to suck it.
The Apprentice, most likely.
I just made the connection because the basic premise is the same. I know nothing about Hunger Games beyond what I saw in the trailer, and that's all I needed to know to not be interested. Battle Royale, on the other hand, looked supremely fucked up in a way that the Japanese filmmakers have mastered, so I felt it was worth a look.

JK Simmons should have gotten an Oscar nom for this at the very least.

Tonight's movie: The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension
This movie simply made very little sense. It seemed like it could've been good, had the writers made a bit of effort. Pity.

you take that back
I second that motion.
I just watched The Final Countdown. It was an interesting window into admittedly fictionalized military operations in the early 80s. Also, watching a Zero pilot shit himself when he gets buzzed by a Tomcat was entertaining.
Hey, I tried to like it. But the narrative structure was just bad. It felt like they just wanted to throw everything out there immediately so you're completely confused, then gave a brief non-explanation about a half hour later (if at all). Sometimes that can work, but it didn't feel like it was done right in this movie.
The "good" aliens' motivations seemed very suspect. If they were willing to destroy an entire world to prevent the other guys from coming back, why didn't they kill them in the first place rather than exile them? And the exile solution just seems like an asshole move anyway. "Let's dump our problem cases on those other life forms."
Ultimately, I just walked away from the movie thinking, "this didn't make sense."

Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol
It was just okay. Action was good.
Chick fight wasn't hot enough
And the ending was gay.
And the plot was cheesy.
But I'll still give it an 80.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture
it's rather odd how different this film was from TOS and the subsequent movies. I didn't know it originally started as a pilot for a new series. I think I've only seen it once, yet I've seen II - IV dozens of times.
overall, it's not bad, but it's not as good as the subsequent films. It was very obviously made in the late 70s.
The Samaritan 2012
Utter shite .... 6.6 on the IMDb, load of crap, 3.7 at best. Boring, ridiculously crap plot, have a wank instead.

Silly, but entertaining enough.

quote:Actually, David Gerrold wrote the series "bible" for TNG, based upon his experience with Star Trek as writer of "The Trouble With Tribbles" and involvement with subsequent series concept developments. The producers of TNG lost an arbitration action between the production company and the Screen Writers Guild over failure to pay for his series concept development and character development and had too pay him a large sum, although he declined the arbitration settlement requirement that he be credited as series creator out of respect for Rodenberry.
It sucked (comparatively) because Gene Roddenberry had more influence than the show and later movies. My understanding is he had similar influence over TNG, but by then they'd figured out how to balance what he wanted with what viewers wanted enough to make the series more enjoyable.
Fair enough. So basically Gene Roddenberry was the reason for ST:TMP sucking, and he didn't redeem himself with TNG. So I guess all he did right was come up with the idea in the first place.

Tonight's movie: Dark Star
Badly cheesy movie, but still quite funny. Beach ball alien for the win.

Tonight's movie: Captain America
This is the one from 1990. It sucked.

I hadn't seen this in some time. It's sort of a sentimental favorite for lots of reasons better not mentioned here. In some ways, it was better than I remembered. In others, not so better. All in all, it stands the test of time better than most more modern movies. I give it a solid 8 of 10.
I watched Battleship on Tuesday night.
I gota admit it, I liked it. It was pretty cheesy in some parts, and obviously quite unrealistic. I've never played the game either, but was told the game elements were in the movie. Definitely lots of similarity to Transformers. Also, there's a sneak peak to a sequel at the end of the credits.
I'll just wait for the prequel and then ignore all three.

"Woman in black 2012"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1596365/
It was fine, I liked it. Radcliff was alright, the scary-scenes were nothing new, but all around and especially because of this neat and dark little setting, the movie was enjoyable.
A classic non horror scary movie for rainy nights.
Man on a ledge (2012)
Watchable but not great.... or particularly good. 5.9/10
Tonight's movie: The Adjustment Bureau
Better than I expected from the plot summary.[spoiler]
Edit: added spoiler tags just in case.

About 3 hours away from Cabin in the Woods.
Fucking. Stoked.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
I wanted to slap some sense into these humans*. I suppose it's a fair point that even leading American scientists are morons, to the point where giving the planet to chimps who master one-syllable words is progress.
*No, actually I want the lame PG-13 removed from this movie and have it show in full detail what an angry chimp can do to a human, righteously. I needed a serious violent outlet for the injustice inflicted on our sympathetic, intelligent outsider. That's how you these things work. Malfoy not getting ripped apart was once again a huge letdown.

Bruce Lee travels to the underworld and takes on Dracula, Clint Eastwood, James Bond, the Godfather, the Exorcist, Emanuelle, and a few others. Also appearing: Popeye! How can you go wrong?
It's quite terrible, but still entertaining.

I watched God Bless America. There was such potential there to tell a great story but it missed the mark by the end of the flick. It's worth watching once but don't expect too much. It really came across as if there was alot of stuff left out. Maybe a directors cut would improve things.

Seems like it could have been a much better movie if it had different actors, directors, special effects, and writers.
It came across as an egg that hatched 6 months too soon and tens of millions of dollars underfunded.
That said, it was a 6 or 7 out of 10.

X-Men: First Class
I found myself completely agreeing with this review:
http://www.salon.com/2011/06/02/xmen_first_class/
TLDR: Silly movie with some clever moments. 6.9/10
I think First Class felt a bit hastily put together, but had a good cast and great moments. It was at least good enough to wash out the bad taste X-men 3 left and to leave me optimistic for a better put together sequel.
January Jones was terrible though.
Banshee almost ruined the entire movie. That was sooo dumb.
worse than January Jones, though? You could cut out her role and not really affect the plot. She was easily the worst part, especially amongst an otherwise good cast.
I don't recall having any problems with Banshee. some of the other characters were may be odd choices, but January Jones was the only part that really stood out as particularly bad.
Silliness top 5:
Azazel: Yeah yeah, you win. Have you like, been to Hell?
Banshee: Really nailed "annoying bug".
Angel: Wait, what, why?
Havok: Disco Inferno! You need roller skates, dude.
Beast: So you're here to hang from stuff?
January Jones was more like a non-entity to me.
Tonight's movie: Melancholia
Incredibly slow--it just drags and drags and drags. It had potential, but failed miserably.

is this your first Lars von Trier?'
I'm saying this cuz you say "potential"
All hos movies are about that simple fact of exploration of being human and how we never met our 'potentials"
Element of Crime is easily my favorite of his work but also see:
Europa
Dancer in the Dark
Dogville
Breaking the Waves and Antichrist are must-sees too. They may not be "entertaining" or whatever, but fuck that. For entertaining, see Kingdom, the miniseries.
I haven't seen Element, Dancer, Dogville or Melancholia yet. I always postpone watching his movies and then I kick myself for having waited so long.
Lars von Trier.
Never saw a dude trying so hard and failing so splendidly.
Thus über-dedicated, über-stylized collective intellectual aberration comes with a disgusting aspiration of declaring itself to "provocative art that mercilessly shows the decaying of our society", but actually shows such overwhelming small minded, suburbish profanity that things like:
"It's not entertaining, but you gotta watch this dude!!!!1oneoneoneone11!!!"
...don't suprise at all. My fucking Latin-teacher in highschool would have staged the destruction of morality exactly like Lars von Trier did. So much to his provocative visonary, that is actually so fucking bourgeois that it hurts.
so ordinary in it's endeavour to be different, it's almost fucking christian. I should have known I would face movies of this danish cunt in this place. 2 things that complement perfectly.
there's nothing worse than people who define themselves over the art shit they consume. bleh.
finished
What an original protest.
Second Lars Von Trier movie, actually. Dancer in the Dark was the first. I kinda liked that one, though it was depressing.
I was kinda hoping Melancholia would be as good. It wasn't by a long shot.
The problem, I think, was that I felt no connection to ANY of the characters in Melancholia. They were all shit, and so it wasn't depressing at all when the world ended.

Super 8 wasn't that bad, but I doubt would have as much interest or held in much regard if there weren't any ties to JJ Abrams or Spielberg.
Well, I had just seen Rise of the Planet of the CGI models (which I totally overrated), and after that, Super 8 was a breath of fresh air.
No, I have not been happy with my latest DVD purchases. 2011 was apparently a crap year for blockbusters.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0328077/
Not the 'best' movie in the world, but definitely creepy in a weird, obsessive, overly perverse way. I liked it.
We watched Hugo. I expected to dislike it but I enjoyed it. It was sweet. Not sure why we both expected to dislike it, drummer especially, probably the trailers didn't do it justice. I loved the homage to old films. Drummer and I are going on a silent film binge.
Just watched God Bless America. Because what the hell, why not? It didn't live up to the promise of the trailer, mainly due to both main characters being handled by people who can't act, being given lines by people who can't write dialogue.

Tonight's movie: Annie
Because the other half was in the mood for it. I'd never seen it before today. I probably won't again. It wasn't bad or anything, but I just didn't care for it.

A Better Life
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1554091/
it was quite fine. a neat trip through the ghetto. troll should see it.
strongly reminds me of south park's mexican labor episode. que?
The Awakening (2011)
I've watched some utter shit recently ... I was looking forward to Contraband, but it turned out to be utter bollocks. Today I put on The Awakening thinking it was a more have the telly on in the background type film, turned out it was a fecking great ghostie type film, one of the better films I've watched this year. The ladies will love it. 7.6/10
Midnight in Paris
Makes me sad I've never been to Paris.
It also shows that Woody has not lost his chops and Owen Wilson can do a mean Woody impression.
The Sitter.
it was decent.
Tonight's movie: Kelly's Heroes
It was decent. For the first hour, I was wondering if I should just turn it off, but it got better after that. Not as funny as I expected considering the cast, though Carroll O'Connor did a great job. Enjoyable enough, overall.

We saw "A Drummer's Dream" and it was truly the drummer's wet dream on screen.
Which doesn't give us much information about that particular movie, except 2 little things:
1. You weren't in it.
2. Most of the budget probably got spent on goat-food.
It's a documentary about a drum camp with several famous drummers who teach and give performances in a beautiful, scenic part of Quebec. It was entertaining if you are into drums. These particular drummers were crazy amazing.
Also, the drummer told me I'm The One for him the other day. I may not be his wet dream, but I somehow made it into the running. <3

Valkyrie
Cruise is incompetent nazi. The end.
Not much to like, despite great cast. 5.5/10
stauffenberg was also kind of an incompetent nazi..

Tonight's movie: Falling in Love Again
It wasn't bad, but I wasn't really impressed.

Secondhand Lions. Sweet. A very nice movie. And, there's Michael Caine and Robert Duvall on the porch with guns.
Yup.
I showed Eyes Wide Shut to Fawkes last night. We had a pretty good time picking out the hidden messages and hints back to his earlier films. (And the film is choked full of these. It's almost overwhelming the number of them.)
It's one of those films I think people love to hate mostly because they don't get it after the first screening. Like 2001 I think it's quality as a great film really comes through after you've seen it a couple of times and it begins to gel in your mind a bit.
It's nothing to be ashamed of.
If two semi-attractive guys decide to watch a movie about nicole and tom making love, then it's just one of many wrong things in their lives.
Heh.
If you think the film was solely about fucking then there is no chance you'll ever actually understand it. It's much more convoluted than that. However, the film was indeed a virtual fuck-fest on a visual level.
2081 -5/5
well, it started off as the greatest thing i've ever seen, and then, just as it was really starting to get good, it ended.
this flick was 23 minutes long. wtf
Tonight's movie: The Great Outdoors
A classic I haven't seen since I was little. Still fun to watch.

That movie looks fine, Rosh.
As a kid, I was a sucker for the whacky american comdies from the 80's...eddie murphy, john candy, akroyd, chevy chase blabla.
I can't remember watching this movie, so I'll give it a try.
Good 80's fun and some shots of American woods...maybe this will make up your "Dragon-Slayer-Movie" recommendation you once used to lure me into that über-crappy-flick.
You know, I really wasn't trying to lure anyone into watching it. But whatever.
This is pretty much classic John Candy/Dan Aykroyd.

Dragon Slayer was the bees knees when I was a kid. Then again, I don't recall too many other movies from then about dragon slaying.
He is referring to Dawn of the Dragonslayer, which was a fairly crappy movie made more recently, though in my opinion not as bad as it's made out to be. Maybe that's just because I've seen so much worse.

Gotcha.
I'm half tempted to get that old film again and see if it still holds up. I think I last watched it sometime around '90 or so. I've got fond memories of it but sometimes such as that is just youth getting in the way of common sense.
Tonight's movie: PCU
Because the other half hadn't seen it. It's one of my old favorites. It's one of those movies I never get tired of rewatching. But maybe that's just me. Either way, it's a fun movie.

Dream House
eh, it's good actors making a bad film. I give them some credit for at least adding another twist to the "they were already dead" plot device.

Tonight's movie: Charade
Very enjoyable movie. Lots of witty dialogue. And as always for me, it's weird seeing actors like Walter Matthau or James Coburn this young.

The Mothman Prophecies.
Yeah yeah. Great subject, mediocre movie. 6/10

"Go Packers! Packers yeeeeeeah..."
Good. Since this thread and the film industry is a huge disappointment, I regulary end up with relaxing to mst3k before falling asleep.
Ehm..good (rather unkown) episode recommendation highly appreciated.

I've seen it twice before :/
The apprentice needed inspiration for Stuff From Another Dimension.
What I always miss from these movies is speculation. In Mothman, the attitude is mostly 'My God I don't know what's happening' or 'You will never understand, so stop thinking about it'. I need the conversation where they discuss freely what it might be. Just for something to play up against my own theories.
Well, if you liked the Mothman Prophecies enough to see it three times, then check out Fire in the Sky. You'd like that one I think. I've seen it at least a half dozen times and enjoyed each viewing.
Yup, love that one. I should buy it. The scenes in space(?) are so great.
Tonight's movie: Late Night Shopping
It was a decent watch. Had some good parts, but ultimately left me feeling unsatisfied. I don't really know how else to explain it.

Just watched Good Dick. I think it was supposed to be romantic, but the guy comes off as a giant creeper. Surprisingly good for a film where the writer, producer, director, and female lead were all the same person.
The Darkest Hour
yeah, jaz was right: retarded.
Tonight's movie: Dark and Stormy Night
It's tongue-in-cheek bad throughout, yet somehow hilarious.

Just watched The Game, with Michael Douglas. Excellent flic, one of the better psychological thrillers I've seen in recent years. I'll give it a 9.2/10.
The Game rules.
Usually when movies like that are so logically untenable after the fact (e.g. The Sixth Sense) it REALLY pisses me off... but The Game was just so fucking cool that I didn't mind at all.
The Redemption of General Butt Naked (2011)
I watched this documentary earlier this evening. It was interesting. When it was over, I found myself wishing more of the back story on Butt Naked (no pun intended) had been included. In all fairness, though, only so much ground can be covered in an hour and a half and this film pretty much stayed on track with title's theme. So, if you'd like a bit more details on his backstory, here's wikipedia.
I give it 3.77 outta 4.00 movie Freds. Here's a link.
Amen.
I watched that a while back, JEB. It was actually pretty good. What I enjoyed the most was hearing him talk about eating children's hearts in one sentence and building a congregation in the next.
Tonight's movie: Young Einstein
I could feel my IQ dropping. It was kinda funny, but so damn stupid.

Browncoats: Redemption
I want to like it but damn... the sound editing is atrocious & would it have killed them to improvise a steadycam? Or just set the camera on a tripod and leave it alone. Something.
SuckerPunch
Meh - Good Romp - nothing on Watchmen tho..

Cabin in the Woods. It was okay. Next weekend I have human centipede2, Plan 9 from Outer Space, and Black Devil Doll on deck!
Tonight's movie: The Birthday
... what the fuck did I just watch?

The Artist
Well done, no doubt, but the story is older than dirt. A tad overhyped, I think.
The dog should have gotten the Oscar nod.
Getting an Oscar is usually the definiton of overrated.
Outpost 2: Black Sun
I liked the original Outpost, the Sequel is better. 7/10
I could only find the german dubbed trailer, but al least AYE will know what's going on. The fil itself is in English.
Tonight's movie: Mighty Aphrodite
It was decent, but I've definitely seen other Woody Allen movies I've liked better.

the houselord has this projection TV downstairs that is insane. The wall is painted with screen-paint. Hulu and the frikkin xbox are cinematic endeavors. I watched a bunch of the game of thrones stuff down there, which was OK, but then I watched this old miniseries deal with Pierce Brosnan called Noble House. HAAAA. It was fantastic from top to bottom. But then I was pretty high.
Tonight's movie: The Boys & Girls Guide to Getting Down
It was funny and entertaining in my usual "laugh at the drunk and drugged up idiots" opinion of these sorts of movies. Ultimately I'm just glad I never bothered with that shit.

Tonight's movie: Carnal Knowledge
It wasn't bad, but it was ultimately disappointing. For the most part, everything happened off-screen, and in the end, there was no resolution.

Tonight's movie: The Boy Who Could Fly
I've seen this one before, but that was when I was little. The movie is... cheesy, but cute.
And the music sounds like the score composer saw the scene in Superman where he flies around with Lois and figured he'd play that little bit of music throughout the whole movie.

The Avengers is one of the coolest movies I have ever seen.
easy 100.
I've been hearing it's good.
It's a vault movie in my eyes.
Hulk Smash is awesome.
Tonight's movie: Jacob's Ladder
Very weird, confusing, and creepy movie. I liked it.
Kinda expected the ending early on, though I kept second-guessing my initial assumption.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1601913/
Aw well, I must say an 'all righty' flick.
despite this Tyrannosaurus/lupus cgi monster-wolf-sub-species they faced and many unrealistic scenes.
We own the night (2007)
A very rare Marky Mark film that isn't utter wank. 8/10
Chronicle (2012)
Another damn good film. 8/10
Tonight's movie: Hugo
Plot-wise, it was enjoyable, if a little slow. Visually, it was wonderful.

Trading Places.
Remember when Eddie Murphy was funny and didn't make family fare shlock? I don't think I've seen this since the mid to late 90s, but the idea holds up pretty well even if the direct references to the time period don't. (lulz at the idea of a Wall Street Trader making "only" $80k today)
I've been wanting to see Beverly Hills Cop the last couple of days.
How stoned do you have to be to want to watch Beverly Hills Cop?
I've been asking that myself. Still, when I was a kid it was the best movie ever. This and Karate Kid was like... 1984's The Matrix.
On the other hand, I would need stronger drugs to want to watch Karate Kid again.
Watch Chronicle if you're going to spend the afternoon smoking the smelly green stuff.
I dunno... the other half and I watched all three Beverly Hills Cops not too long ago. The first one actually still holds up as quite an enjoyable movie. The others... well, they're sequels. At least they're still funny Eddie Murphy, as compared to what he's become.
Though I think I prefer Coming to America.

I don't think I've ever watched any of the Beverly Hills Cop movies.
Too mainstream.
I would not put Chronicle in a barrel with Eddie Murphy and call it a pickle.
Today's movie: The Avengers
Lots of fun. Definitely worth seeing if you have any interest in this sort of movie.
I'll admit I was kinda iffy when I heard Mark Ruffalo was going to be the Hulk, but I think he's done the best job yet.

Aliens (extended version)
Meh, the original cut is better. Every new scene is pretty much redundant and/or slows down the pace of the movie.
God Bless America
Kind of preaching to the choir, but the targets just weren't right wing douchebags like the people that teach their children to "hate fags."
PC gets knocked around too. The guy gets fired for sending flowers to a woman at work to cheer her up. He's told it's sexual harassment.
My Little Princess.
Considering its 'frenchness' it is actually worth watching.

despite the hulk, the avenger's superhero cast is pretty B-celeb.
While Iron man supposingly is the lamest marvel hero ever (comics and movies), cpt. America is just a LoL.
Imagine a guy called Cpt. France, put him in a tricolore spandex and give him a shield with a big rooster on it and you get a glimpse of the ridiculousness we feel if we see this hillbilly Missgeburt.
Sherlock.
I've downloaded both series, and I'm pretty sure Benedict Cumberbatch should have been on Spin's Top 100 Guitarists list.
I saw the first three episodes. 'Tis a silly thing, but passable.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
I enjoyed it but despite all the great anarchy I think it needs more depth. 7/10
Okay Cronicle is pretty decent but fuck. The idiot should have thought this all out.
They could all have been HUGE.
Still though. 91.
Chronicle was alright, but I didn't think they described Seattle's peculiarities and North America's thought pattern's the right way, which influenced the whole movie negatively.
I didn't see any woodcrafted, unworldly hippster nor a guy, who used his superpower to get a free Cheeseburger.
Only the annoying, completely random and preposterously wrong philosopher's quotes gave me a slight notion that it's actually classical American cinema.
2/5.
Tonight's movie: Heart of Dragon
Old Jackie Chan movie. A little heavy handed on the sentimentality, but otherwise a solid story.
Good action sequences. Unlike so many martial arts movies, nobody simply shows off their kung fu skills. Also, the movie lacks the usual anti-gun sentiment; everyone (good and bad) uses the most effective weapons at hand, often to brutal effectiveness.
Overall, I enjoyed it.

Hot Fuzz. ++++
Tonight's movie: The Gods Must Be Crazy
Fun movie.

The Cabin in the Woods. Hilarious. Best bloodbath I've seen in a while. Favorite bits:
[spoiler]
I watched The Avengers last weekend, and sadly did not enjoy it as much as everyone around me had. It's probably cuz I went into the cinema in a bad/dark/depressed mood.
Watched Dark Shadows on Tuesday night. Just another typical Tim Burton / Johnny Depp collaboration. There were a few element of surprises, other than that it was pretty bland and kinda boring....!
so it's a perfect adaptation of the television show

Sounds like the last one-hundred times I had sex.
Red State
Hard to like, despite all the moron merkins getting wasted.
It seems so obvious when you think about it, but Kevin Smith has a really lousy imagination. Most of the surprises here are weakened by being very clichéd surprises. I liked most of the acting though. 6.6/10
Tonight's movie: Man with the Screaming Brain
B-movie cheesiness, as only Bruce Campbell can provide. Not on the same level as Bubba Ho-tep, but fun enough nonetheless.
The other half pretty much walked out on Ted Raimi's rapping, though. Can't say as I blame her.

the grey..... boring as shit,,,, reminded me of the edge... the edge was better

Those trumpets were definitely the best part, you could see how this movie would now deliver and become awesomely original. Alas.
Sucker Punch
What the FUCK am I watching. Has anyone seen more than the first 20 or so minutes? Had to turn it off.
It's a wonderfully fucking mental movie. More than half of it seems to take place inside the main character's head, but the events in there somewhat mirror what's going on outside. It's actually a pretty horrible story when you strip events down to their bare essentials. Meanwhile, insane kung fu gun battles with dragons and shit, handled in Catholic school uniforms and tight leather, set to moderately trancy electronica. What's not to like?
I liked Sucker Punch. It's weird, but entertaining.

Today's movie: Dark Shadows
I haven't seen the original series, so I have no idea how it compares to that. However, on its own, it's a fun movie, if nothing special.

Tonight's movie: Twins
It's been a long time since I'd seen it. Still funny.

Twins 2 with Eddie Murphy gets a lot of laughs
"21 Jump Street"
I'm just not made for comedies like this.
Nobody is.
It doesn't even have anything to do with the original show. Which was an after school special filmed during school.
Tonight's movie: The Woman in Black
On the up side, I barely thought of Harry Potter at all. On the down side, the movie is overly reliant on cheap scares meant to make you jump. It is a fairly nice attempt to get away from the gore side of horror movies, but ultimately fails to really establish the story and atmosphere necessary to send chills down your spine.
And the ending sucked.

Dark Shadows. I have been prepared to hate it since the first whisper, but I ended up enjoying it a lot, even chuckling(!) from time to time. Could have been the meds. 4 out of 5 klonopins. I appreciated that it wasn't intended for kids (IE you must actually remember the 70s, and have watched the original series pretty thoroughly, if you are to fully enjoy this flick). Hearty thanks to the sexy nurse that made me go along for this one.
Tonight's movie: In Time
While not exactly bad, the movie's premise was just so absurd I simply couldn't get into it.

I love trailers that don't give a clue to what this movie is about.

It wath thuper fun.

It was a lot of fun. Much funnier than I expected, though it's very silly.

Act of Valor
Quite a good film if you have a tendency to get over excited and shout 'FUCK YEAH' at at the telly whilst enthusiastically waving the American flag. 6.7/10

Sappy, and it goes a little over the top as Steve Carell movies tend to do. But it was funny, and I rather enjoyed watching it.

I stumbled upon Mr. Brooks after googling Dane Cook, cuz he is very hot. Though not so hot in Mr. Brooks. Still, it was a pretty good movie. Should have probably had more twists and turns to keep you guessing, still it played out pretty well. About 3.5/5.

You already know how you will feel after watching Mr Brooks. Slightly entertained, slightly puzzled, kind of annoyed, but 'it was alright'.

So I watched that flick yesterday.
Was a good watch, as you said. Quite and unpretentious, at first I wasn't thinking that communicating with the past wasn't a really brandnew attempt in that genre, but it was well executed.
Even if I usually don't get very much out of horror movies, this one kept my imagination in an icy grip.
It might had some story holes and flaws, but none the less I enjoyed it's subtility.
"The dusk was repeating them in a persistent whisper all around us, in a whisper that seemed to swell menacingly like the first whisper of a rising wind. ‘The horror!’"
The Caller
If any of you had mentioned Rachelle LeFevre was the star of this, I would have watched it sooner than now.
I'd watch her clothed over half the female stars in movies today nude.
I enjoyed The Caller, quite a good film.
Another similar film that's worth a watch is 100 Feet. I gave in 7.8/10 but the imdb only gave it 5.6, but it is pretty good.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0899128/
I thought 100 feet was shit, except the scene when her toyboy got shred to pieces.
Let's use asylum's supranationality and integrity to create an internethype for the caller and make it a cult classic.
Tonight's movie: Timecop
Yeah, I have no excuse for this one. The other half hadn't seen it, and I was just in the mood for a cheesy action movie. Yay, Van Damme...

jeebus the previews look much better but I watched Rampart and Trust_. Rampart reminded me of my darkest self, and Trust_ made me worried about my daughter.
Oh the humanity.
Tonight's movie: The Caller
Thanks for the recommendation, all. Good stuff. Though I still can't get over how stupid she is simply giving her full name to a stranger over the phone.

Safe House (2012)
One big 90 minute fight completely devoid of any story whatsoever. 4/10
From the looks of the trailer, the story is how the white man got suppressed in this economy.
Today's movie: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Hasn't gotten a lot of notice, but it's a great movie. Definitely worth checking out, in my opinion.
The other half was disappointed that there were no Bollywood dance scenes, though.

Flight of the Intruder
I'm staying with my folks helping my dad take care of my mom, and being memorial day weekend at a right-wing conservative baby boomer's house, we watched this pile of shit. Just imagine Charlie Sheen eating the scripts to Tropic Thunder, Saving Private Ryan, and The Terminator series, then becoming constipated from the overdose of fiber, having a colonic to evacuate his bowels, drinking his own effluence, puking into Rush Limbaugh's gaping maw, and then having Rush gargle the national anthem into Roseann Barr's funnel-equipped anus while she typed up her idea of America's victory in Viet Nam.
And Lou Diamond Phillips was interviewing the author during commercial breaks. What the fucking fuck?!?

Anyways as a "would-be" writer I have to say that this is the exact kind of script that sells.
1) it's horror/thriller
2) One major Character
3) Confined location ie. one set: the apartment
4) Interesting plot choices
I also hear that the DVD features deleted scenes that explain a few of the plot holes that where cut for timing. There is in fact a scene where the lead digs out the old phone from storage and plugs it in because she can't seem to get reception on her cell phone in the apt.
Tonight's movie: Repossessed
It's certainly no Airplane! but it's better than the shit that passed for spoof movies these days.

I think "scary movie 3" did it better
I couldn't make it through Scary Movie 2, so I wouldn't know.

And KG is a classic, foreign, arthouse movie torrent site.
I've been there so long that when I first got invited, the only way to get an invitation was to write an essay on art.
O I still demand an essay!
youve seen how i write.... no essay from me...lol
Tonight's movie: Angel Heart
Really weird movie. Sadly, I had the ending figured out about 10 minutes in. Even so, I enjoyed watching the story unfold.

The First Beautiful Thing
Schmaltzy, but I like schmaltzy if it's well done. And it was.
It's a human thing about a sad family that finally figures things out just as mom is dying.
Tonight's movie: Supergirl
Let's see... bad plot, cheesy characters, and several scenes where the main character conveniently forgets that she's basically immune to the dangers thrown at her. And the product placement was really blatant and out of place. (Though now I want some root beer.)
Could've been worse, but really not worth watching. Just another movie that's not as good now as when I was a kid.

Last Night
Odd story. Very Canadian. Not entirely sure how I feel about the whole thing, though I don't count that time wasted.
I watched the third Harold and Kumar movie the other day. It was OK but nowhere as good as the first two.
I watched Senna. I knew nothing about Formula 1 racing before the film. Now I wish I could have seen him race.
Tonight's movie: TiMER
The concept stretched disbelief a bit, but after you get over that it's a fairly decent movie.

I'm going to see Prometheus tomorrow and am a bit miffed that I should probably rather have bought tickets for MIB3.
You need to come over and 'read some dutch books' with me before watching Prometheus.
Oh and don't come back here and tell it's shit, we don't wanna hear..(before we saw it ourselves)
I hate to be such a fucking movie sheep.
I just watched a Swedish masterpiece called Four Shades of Brown and it took me eight years, whereas I'll run off and pay to watch new US crap if it's had a marketing campaign. It's just not good enough.

Tonight's movie: The Witches of Eastwick
It wasn't bad, but it felt like things were happening behind the scenes that were never shown or explained. Could've been better.

Wut, you get postmodern Satan in the shape of Jack Nicholson. You can't complain.
Zoozin Zerandon and Cher ruined it for me; those are two ladies I just can't deal with, for some reason. People say "Moonstruck" in a confrontational way at me and I'm all like "er; no"
Yeah ok. I can't stand Sarandon either.
there ought to be a law
Yeah, Jack Nicholson was great in the movie. Of course, he's just playing more of the same character he usually plays, but that's because he does it so well.
I don't really care one way or the other about Cher or Sarandon. Cher's way of speaking was a lot less intrusive in this movie than most of hers.
It just seemed like they cut a lot of scenes that they had intended to include, which left me asking "where did that shit come from" several times in the movie.

Prometheus isn't out here until next week, but we have a posse formed and are set to take over the theater. Also, fubes, you should come here and see it with me and mine.
Today's movie: Men in Black III
Better than I expected, but I didn't exactly have high expectations. Josh Brolin did a great job as young K.

Prometheus
Humans go to a certain planet and find bad stuff. Nice tech, guys. Does the android know something? Someone dies horribly. Confusion! Semi-naked female scientist! Bravery! OMG WTF IS THA*BEEEEEEEEEP* Do you read me? Do you read me? Let's sort this shit. ??/10
Oh and WATCH 2D VERSION.
I will definitely watch it again as such.
From that review I might infer that the film is a slightly expanded version of the trailer.
The Princess of Montpensier
Nice Tavernier romantic period piece. The trouble was, I wasn't too damned fond of any of the characters.
If you're going to watch a romance, you should be able to root for the lovers.

Somebody talk to me about Senna or I will have to start a thread.
He drove fast to get somewhere before someone else.
A thoroughly stupid endeavor in my estimation.
At least he didn't drive in circles.
Formula 1 seems a silly and antiquated sport, much like bull fighting.
I am not saying I don't think the idea is stupid, Ijust want to discuss aspects of the film that intrigued me. I fully expected him to die a pointless death at high speed.
Also, just saw Snow White and the Huntsman. Kirsten Stewart can ruin any film, no matter how well Charlize Theron plays an evil madwoman.
Prometheus, further notes to lower your expectations:
Worst make-up ever on Peter Weyland and the engineers. It's stunningly bad. Did anyone consider having an actual old man play the old man? Instead of undermining the respect you might have for Guy Pearce.
The engineers (space jockey dudes) look like michelin men underneath their elephant space suits. This is not a spoiler, it is the first thing you will wonder about : Why is rubber dude killing himself?

gah...now i have to watch it
Good. Then you can post here. We should probably start a "Let's complain about Prometheus" thread now.
Yeah, the 700 threads on Imdb aren't enough.
I have so many docs waiting to be watched, I'll forego Senna.
To wit:
Buck
Page One
Conan O'Brien Can't Stop
Tabloid
Project Nim
One Lucky Elephant
The Interrupters
Tabloid was fun. Haven't seen the others. Will have to mention to the drummer. He has a doc fetish.
Rokkr, a documentary you might enjoy is The Flying Scotsman , about Graeme Obree.
I'll look into it, thanks.

It's quite huge in Germany, I'm not a sucker for it, but my Dad is. I guess it's because germans always had some strange fixation on races...
Anyway...I was able to watch some GP's, which isn't that cool, because you basically see the race on a bigscreen except the part of the track you have your seat at...
but
..seeing it live adds a whole new perspective, I was actually scared, when these cars came around.
I never heared something so noisy, like 10000000 thunderstorms and even when you're at a bend-segment it takes 2 ms for them to be over.
Just meaning it's an extreme sport, it's high prestige for the teams, which leads to a lot of invested money.
Mentioning that terrible noise, sitting on a god damn rocket and the other fuckers on the track, phew.
Tonight's movie: The Royal Scandal
Mmm... a Hallmark movie. Not as bad as some of them I've seen, though that's not saying much. Also, watching Max Headroom play Sherlock Holmes was rather distracting.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi. I know what I'll be dreaming about tonight. That's right, octopus moving around in a bag and making squidgy sounds. Enjoyable.
Have you seen Old Boy yet?
some kind of Prophecy movie with that one rail-thin Playboy semi-redhead that was in that Hellraiser sequel. It was awful but I couldn't lean forward in order to click it off. I fell asleep and woke up to some deal where Patricia Arquette solves crimes by dreaming. WTF.

Teen Wolf - How did we think this movie was any good back then? I must have totally blocked out just how bad this film is.
Ed Wood - It's better than I remembered it being.
The Assasination of Richard Nixon - Well worth the time spent watching. It's really good.
Snow White and the Huntsman
It was actually fun.
Snow White is a fucking badass.

Buck
About Buck Brannaman, the inspiration for The Horse Whisperer.
Some people just immediately strike you as someone you'd like to know.
Buck certainly does.
Conan O'Brien Can't Stop
This covers his tour after being banned contractually from TV for a while after the Tonight Show debacle.
Invariably in docs like this one, true character can't always be hidden by camera awareness.
And so it is here. Conan comes of as funny, driven, inherently talented and basically a decent guy who got screwed over.

Tonight's movie: The Impostors
It's a very... weird movie. It's funny, but I think it tries a little too hard to be like the old-time slapstick comedies, but somehow falls a little short. That's not to say it's bad. I quite enjoyed it, but I just felt it was lacking.

Chernobyl Diaries
Typical white people gotta look into every dark fucking hole.
It's like Blair Witch filming.
The ending was strange.
I liked the location.
But I wanted more.
just a 65.
TNG The Family Se4ep2- There is no scifi in this episode (not even Data makes an appearance)- it all exists only as suggestion, which is what makes this episode unique and noteworthy. It tread new ground for reconciling film with scifi as it used to be in the print days, when it complemented the imagination rather than assaulting it with extravagant in your face visuals. I saw the "Best of Both Worlds" episodes ages ago but have mostly forgotten them, so seeing this last part of the trilogy merely rekindled my recollection, making it richer and more entertaining than if I had rewatched them. This is what scifi is all about- things forever more profound than are we, forever beyond our understanding and which will forever humble us- such that to even assume that we can imagine them in literal film is hubristic, lest it be mere fantasy.

Tonight's movie: Man-Thing
This was not a good movie. Basically, it's Swamp Thing meets cheesy B-movie horror flick. (Yes, I know, technically Man-Thing came out first in the comics. I think I've even got some old Giant Size Man Thing issues... kinda what prompted me to give this a try.)
Not so bad that I'd stop in the middle, but really not worth watching.

The Dictator
There was maybe two parts that made me chuckle.
But overall it dragged.
70.
Tonight's movie: The Losers
Not bad. Good mix of action and humor. General plot (elite military team set up and betrayed, wants revenge) is way overdone, and has been done better.

Me Again
I'm not even gonna rate this.
The trailer looked interesting.
It started interesting until I realized it's Christian propaganda.
But it was still....okay.
Yet cheesy. But I watched the whole thing.
What the fuck is wrong with me.
You have crapophilia.
Wanderlust
surprisingly funny
Tonight's movie: THX 1138
Steaming pile of shit. How the hell did George Lucas get a chance to make a second movie?

He obviously knows some mind tricks.

I pretty much love him.
i didnt mind the 5 obstructions... I dont remember hating the idiots if that says anything.... everything else Ive seen I dislike greatly.. wont even watch anything with his name on it anymore

Fair enough. I suggest watching "Element of Crime" though if you haven't, just for the entire purpose of what he chooses to point the camera at. It's a straightforward story though told in a dreamlike state and admittedly a homage to Tarkovsky type films.
Well, most musicians would like to make a Beatles song, but few directors would want to make a LVT movie. His soul is twisted.

It's very weird. Fairly decent fight scenes. It just felt really confusing... hard to understand why everyone was doing what they were doing. Overreacting compounded by overacting just made it more difficult to watch.

Snow White and the Huntsman was awesomeeee...I watched it once for free at a media screening, and then paid for it and watched it again yesterday. Best movie for the year so far, to me.
Prometheus was such a let down. On the bright side, everyone's looking at recovering from surgeries by stapling themselves from now on.
Madagascar 3 was totally awesome! One of the funniest animation I've seen in a long time and I usually never enjoy animations.
Madagascar 3 won the box office, surprising for a 3rd animated film

My router died last night, so no internet until I get a new one tomorrow.
So last night was catch up on movies night.
First was One Lucky Elephant, followed by Project Nim.
Both were well done, despite having totally different subjects as to how we treat animals.
The one thing I came away from both with is that, and bear in mind I'm no PETA nut and I eat meat, is that we treat animals atrociously.
I pretty much think, that aside from testing, which humans would be much worse off without, that wild animals shouldn't be caged or made pets out of. We have dogs and cats for that shit.
Small Town Murder Songs
A relatively short film, only 72 minutes, but dense with atmosphere. Peter Stormare is very good as a small town cop dealing with a murder.
Submarine
A teenage angst flick done with humor and care. The male and female leads are wonderful.
Best lines in the movie.
"I knew it was all over. She'd gone all gooey in the center. She'd never burn the hair off my legs again."
..
Mickey D's Wifi. God bless it.
So I guess McDonald's is your kind of place and you're loving it.
What's the speed like there?
And what did you order?

Tonight's movie: The Ladykillers (Coen Brothers remake)
I thought it was very funny, except for Marlon Wayans. I can't think of a movie where I actually liked Marlon Wayans... at best, he doesn't ruin it.
I'm gonna have to check out the original now.
