First off, i missed a good bit of this movie because there was a retard(a real one) sitting behind me making noises the whole fucking time. After he was making noises during dialog at the end somebody yelled shut up at him and most of the people in the theater laughed. I knew he was retarded because he went to my high school... anyway, I'm feeling a bit retarded myself because I didnt understand that wings on the package bit? Why didnt he open that one and how did it save his life??
Post Script: I have decided I like seeing movies by myself a lot more than seeing it with "friendS".

The wings were the tm of the artist. Something she put on the box when sending it.(see it all over her ranch?) it was her trade mark/ art de nom ect...
Hanks saw it as a symbol of freedom, escape ect(the wings) and couldn't bring himself to open the package. He wanted to deliver it. It was the last one. He was very dedicated to being a fed ex guy i guess...
So he paints his outhouse sail with them when he escapes. and the rest is history.
Movies are good by yourself. I like it that way too.

agreed. the wings on the package became an obsessive symbolism for something good and right, something pure. that's why he didn't open it. he thought that maybe there was something very important about that package because of the wings. when he delivered the package, and realized at the end of the movie that his symbol for freedom was nothing more than a trademark to the rest of the world, he had to laugh a little inside. imagine being in the worst mental condition you've ever found yourself. you find a piece of artwork that touches you to your soul, that pulls at you. there's just something about it that keeps you moving, that urges you to continue. when at last you break through, and find freedom, you find out it's nothing more than a candy bar logo. how would you feel? chagrined? or enlightened?
The part of the movie that I felt hinted at the ending was the fact that the woman was listening to Elvis when the FedEx guy picked up her package (they went as far as to show her Elvis CD) and several times when Hanks was in his Jeep he was listening to Elvis.
Maybe I just picked up on it cause I like Elvis, I dunno, but I thought that they've gone out of their way to make them both Elvis fans, they'll end up together.
