New STP and 311 album thoughts
I stopped in a music store today and gave both of these new albums my typical run through to see whether or not they grab me. STP had it going right on 2 of the first 3 tracks (the bad one being "Days of the Week"), then fell into the pop-rock world of their latest single. If you really like "Days..." then the rest of the album is probably up your alley, but otherwise don't take a chance on it. I noticed a Toadies rip-off on it too, bad job at that. The new 311 sounds a bit more like their first 2 albums than their efforts since breaking out. Definitely edgier, mid-tempo stuff that I may have to break down and buy. It's growing on me fast. If any of you bought either of these or have given them a good listen, what did you think?

i've only heard 1 song off each cd so far...
STP: after hearing days of the week, i wouldn't buy this if someone held a gun to my head. granted, i don't like a lot of their older stuff either, but this song is painful.
311: I've heard you wouldn't believe (i think that's it?) sounds too much like their old stuff. as one radio guy here said in a not so subtle way by singing the words to "come original" to this tune...the stuff is TOO similar. tho i'm still undecided as the guys from 311 said they released this as a single specifically because it sounded extremely familiar if you know their past stuff.

are you insane? do you understand the definition of "old", or are you just one of those people who thinks that the blue album was their first because it was the first one to get top-line media play?
Chaos and Soundsystem are both huge departures from the original 311 style, and far too much so for my tastes. i took a loooong time getting to like Transistor, and its still isn't too far up there on my list of great albums. Soundsystem was a product of bad production and too much time on their hands. it lacked in everything but dissapointing qualities and, though certainly a throwback in a few tracks, Chaos is right on its heels. p-nut has been stifled and simply plays along with tim now, and nothing tim does is any more impressive then whoever bangs on the guitar for the likes of limp bizkit or crazy town.
while on the subject of lacking creativity, neither nick nor sa is really pulling his weight either. looking back at grassroots and music, especially later on with transistor, sa has always been very vague and alien. he really gave tone to what he said, and has a superior style. nick always balanced it with an earthy tone and flow, along with more concentrated lyrics.
its late and i dont have my track listings with me here. i never bothered with soundsystem enough to memorize song names and chaos is new, so this post will be edited tomorrow. morons.

actually logan, p-nut does play on his own, just no solos like "Feels so Good." i found the basslines very different, but they lock in the groove on about 90% of the songs. p-nut is still a great bass player, and i agree, i would love to hear more solos etc from him, but who knows what's going on over there...
also, while chad's playing on this album isn't his best, he's still pulling his weight, if you actually listen to what's going on. he grooves pretty fucking well, i reckon.

if it's too loud, turn it down.

In other "hey? haven't I heard this before?" news:
New Ministry video "What About Us?" is up @ launch.com
The video is from A.I. and was not shot separately from the film. So basically Speilberg filmed the video, but it's still just ok, and it looks like the song has the same chick that sung on supermanic soul.
The song will not be on the A.I. soundtrack, but will instead show up on Greatest Fits. Ministry also has gone back to Texas to work on new stuff, last time they went to Texas they ended up with Filth Pig.
Warner Bros (which I thought had dropped them) just revamped the Ministry site @ www.darkspoon.com
