they call it........progressive
I know most people here tend to favour techno when it comes to dance music, but I was wondering if there was anyone out there who listens to a little house music?
(I’m not talking about the commercial ‘hands up in the air’ cheese that pollutes the singles charts and can be found on crappy ministry of sound compilations. Finding ‘pop songs’ dressed up pretending to be credible dance records is pretty easy).
So, if I throw the following genres at you:
Deep tribal house, hi-NRG house, deep house, dub, breakbeat, tech house, electro, deep trance/house and progressive…
(I’d just like to say I do not like hard-house or happy hardcore. If you don’t know what they are, don’t ask).
Would you be familiar with them?
To be honest, I’ve always hated the various genres that aim to describe the style of dance that’s currently smashing up sound systems across the world’s clublands.
It can be all a bit pretentious, as a lot of what’s classed as one type of genre can also be classed as something completely different.
And the fact that the music is constantly evolving makes it tricky to stick labels to a particular sound.
As for ‘trance’…….well, RIP.
Over-commercialism destroyed trance a few years back. Trance, which is somewhere between techno and uplifting house, was hijacked by every tom, dick and harry and before long we had formulistic crap that hurt the genre bad.
That’s not to say that the genre is dead and buried. RIP? Not yet, but its moved on from the obvious uplifting feel. Gone are the comedy breakdowns and ridiculous crescendos that ruined that whole genre two years ago.
Even DJ Tiesto (dutch dj/producer who loves his uplifting trance) has changed.
In fact, its all got a lot ‘darker’ and ‘tribal’. Sure, you still get the ‘happy happy joy joy joy’ sounds of commercial house music – but the genres I mentioned tend to be more gritty and at times more minimalistic and almost bordering on techno.
Sorry, I’m blabbering. Back to my original point:
Does anyone who’s reading this have a healthy interest in this type of music? Do you go clubbing? I’m interested to hear anything about the club scene in the US. I’m thinking of visiting early next year.
Are you familiar with the Global Undergound series of cd’s? Do you own any of the Renaissance mix albums?
Do you know of the PLATIPUS and hooj labels?
Have you ever heard:
xpander / sasha
deep love 9 / JSJ
intensify / way out west
the baguio track / luzon
twilo thunder / breeder
it come from africa / chemical brothers
Are you familair with Bedrock, Renaissance, Gods Kitchen, Cream?
As for dj’s, who mix/produce/spin this type of music:
Darren Emerson, Nick Warren, Dave Seaman (not the arsenal goalkeeper if any smartass limey reads this), John Digweed, Sasha, Jimmy Van M, Max Graham, X-Press 2, Deep Dish?
(the nubreed)
Lee Burridge, Craig Richards, Danny Howells, Sander Kleinenberg, Anthony Pappa, Steve Lawler?
(this lot are pretty commercial, but thought I’d mention them anyway)
Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, Timo Mass, Armin Van Buuren? And Paul Oakenfold - who has also gone the way of BT towards more mainstream sounds.
But NOT: Roger Sanchez, Armin Van Helden, David Moralles…..and the like.
So, is the above all just a blur to you?
If it isn’t, and you know what I’m harping on about……reply. I’m sure there must be at least 5 out of 992 asylumites who are into this ‘scene’.
cheers
