Yep, I fucked up, com port problem.
Been two weekends trying to sort this one.....
The capture software for my digital video camera won't recognise the camera.
It's not the camera, it talks to two other computers, just not mine.
I've thrown away the modem, delved into .inf files, and pissed about with the drivers.
The solution at the moment seems to be to reallocate the serial port it uses from com port 1 to com port 2.
Anyone know how to do this? Or can point me to a forum where people would?
I couldn't find the suitable section in the BIOS, and I'm having a shit of a time searching around the web, and in the help files for the solution.

Hmmm, you should have two different com ports on the back of you machine either two 9 pin ports or a 9 pin and a 25 pin port.
You may need a converter, but you should be able to plug into whichever you want.
If you believe it may be an actuall fault with teh port itself, check its connected to the motherboard correctly. You will find that it is wither hard wired onto the board or connected via a ribbon cable to it, there there is a little plug - much like a very short IDE/SCSI cable, ensure that this is correctly attached, and that all the pins are okay on both the plug on your m-board and the actual interface with your camera.
It seems strange that your DV camera plugs into a com port however, i would have expected it to use a firewire or USB port.

The device manager says the the port is working properly. The next step I guess will be to get my midi keyboard back, and see if that is recognised by the port.
If not, I'll get the screwdriver out and have a look inside, a mechanical fault, didn't think of that.
1,000 thanks for the quick reply.

The camera is a JVC, and it uses a protocol called JLIP to capture still images via the serial port. Really handy when it works, you can throw picture galleries together in minutes.
To capture video I use a firewire card, but my machine is not really up to it, combination of slow hard drive, slow processor, and lack of ambition.
Also the fact that it took me months to find out that I had to download Directx8 and an .exe file to get the thing capturing properly.

if you're sure its not the camera could it be the software?

Camera and software work fine on other machines.

dingle is right, it could be the software - try an uninstall - reinstall if you havent done that already.
and any cables and shit that might be damaged
Anyone that has worked in any kind of IT support role will automatically ignore any comments like 'it worked earlier' and 'it works on my other computer'
