One page I saw on googling suggested, obliquely, that this problem can arise due to bad RAM. So that might well be it, if it causes the same problems on different machines.

I was dicking around with a motherboard this weekend, had to get some DDR ram, all the advice from the forums was to get decent ram, as the motherboard was picky.

I got the cheapest possible and it worked anyway.

So maybe your bad ram will work on some other mobo one day.

"bad ram" probably has a different meaning in Wales.

It could even be a compatibility issue. But if the RAM is bad, and new, I'd take it back to the retailer for an exchange or refund.

If it is not new, most decent memory manufacturers provide a Lifetime Warranty on their RAM, and you can get a replacement from them.

Good luck on it, Rizz.

Speaking of RAM, can anyone tell me how to determine if a RIMM is ECC or non-ECC and tell me what the fucking difference is?

The only compatability issue I know of is if you have PC100 RAM in your machine you can only add PC100, unless you get a 512 of PC133. Dunno if that helps at all.
