Mother's Diary
Mother’s Diary
In the course of my book fondling which has become a pervasive sin I chanced upon a little red book entitled God’s Promises For Everyday which I had taken to be a book from my Mother’s collection of religious texts. I had seen the book before but to the best of my memory I had never opened it. But today I opened the book and found to my surprise that it was a diary kept rather faithfully by my mother in the year of 1993. I am sure of that year because of events mentioned in the text. If you will remember 1993 was the last year I worked any at UTL, it was the year my social security started, it was the year that Pam graduated from Austin Community College, it was the year that Cathy got her Ph.D., it was the year that Alec broke his arm---all of these events are mentioned in the Diary.
I have dozens of journal-like books by my father–mainly logs of hours worked by members of his crew but this is one of only two books which were a diary of my mother’s thoughts. To me they were a treasure but I am first to admit that they may be of no interest to some of you because of the very ordinary events she describes. Many of the entries are really very commonplace. At any rate here is the content of the diary offered without further apology. Typing the diary made me lonesome for Mother again.
Preface-The following poem was pasted in the inside flyleaf of the diary. I have no idea who wrote it:
He does not lead me year by year
Nor even day by day.
But step by step my path unfolds:
My Lord directs the way.
Tomorrow’s plan I do not know,
I only know this minute
But He will say, This is the way,
By faith now walk ye in it."
And I am glad that it is so
Today’s enough to bear,
And when tomorrow comes, His grace
Shall far exceed its care.
What need to worry then, or fret?
The God who gave His Son
Holds all my moments in His hand
And gives them one by one.

Bill and Rowena and Christine came today. It is good to have them here. They wanted to see Weldon. He is making good progress but can't talk very much or have any activity.
Sep 25 Sat
This the day for the Hamilton reunion at Rockwall. Bill, Rowena and Christine are going. It is a bit rainy. It was not well attended.
Oct 8 Fri
We are making good progress in cleaning 1728 Parkside but it is so filled with filth and trash that it looks almost impossible. We are all tired and are staying home today.
Oct 9 Sat
It is sort of an "off" day. No work at 1728. Danny has the day off.
Oct 10 Sun
We had a good attendance this AM (118). We called Bryan Williams as our youth director. I slept nearly all afternoon and I sure needed it.
Oct 11 Mon
It is almost cold but it feels pretty good. Webb Roofing is putting a new roof on 1728 Parkside. Charles is coming in to work in the building. We worked until about 1:30. Both of us are sore and "achey". The dumpster is about full. They are bringing a different one to replace the full one. The kids had a holiday to attend the State Fair.
Oct 12 Tue
Still sort of cold. We are having our class meeting this AM. We will elect officers... The class presented me a beautiful birthday cake---a bit early. The meeting was orderly and productive.
Oct 13 Wed
Charles did not come in today to work at 1728. The new youth director will meet with the kids tonight. We are all looking forward to his ministry.
Oct 14 Thu
Another work day at 1728 bldg. We worked on the outside trash. I was not able to do much. My back hurt. We quit about 1:30. Our dumpster was full of water. Charles baled it out with Danny's help.
Oct 15 Fri
It is cloudy all over but it hasn't rained yet. Sure hope it doesn't. We really don't need it right now. I must finish studying my SS lesson. I visited Weldon and Leona for a while. He didn't seem too satisfied with his breathing. I think that he is uneasy---I am too!
Oct 16 Sat
My happy birthday and I am happy that the Lord has given me health and happiness these many years as long as I can be of use to Him I will be happy. Christine called.
Nov 24 Wed
Leona was operated on to remove blood clots from both sides of the brain. It was very serious but God is blessing her with recovery. Every day seems better. The weather is cold wet and terrible.
