I forgot I had a blog thing by torque - 2005-06-29 20:56:33
I have been spending most of my time outdoors in any semblance of light, spraying the kids with the hose or the sprinklers. Building a pretty nice match rifle out of a dpms .308 LR and having a neat time figuring out ways to ensure the bloop tube stays level. Mybe not letting it get bumped is the best plan, save drilling a little divot in the barrel to run a set screw into.

I also started out building the bathroom of the gods in my basement, it will be a fine place to retire to when I tire of the shop, and will have a bookshelf. Anyone have any good ideas for things to be added to the bathroom of the gods? I just started framing. I finished the rest of the basement, even the carpet is done, so it's time to move onto the next project.

Live fire, and about damned time. by torque - 2005-03-21 02:43:16
Range trip. Thank goodness. I had a few weeks worth of reloads to try, a weeks worth of work worries to dissipate, and a couple boxes of cheap wal mart winchester 9mm's to burn.

I ended up with a last minute range buddy. I thought I was going to get out clean, but my eldest saw me grab my range bag, and I was put in one of those daddy predicaments. So, we grabbed his little savage cub, a box of federal lightning, and hit the road. So, I've been working with him about once or twice a month, just letting him punch paper off a rest with that little .22 of his. He'd been getting better, so I decided he might be able to hit a soda can at 25 yards, and set a few up. I had tried to avoid shooting at anything reactive with him as I thought it would really break his heart if he couldnt get one during a trip. His paper targets were telling me it was time to see how things would go. First shot, dust on the berm, maybe an inch high. He tells me "daddy, I missed it" We run the bolt, load a second, he gets on the stock, trigger finger resting on wood like i taught him, and did something I hadn't taught him yet. I saw a deep breath, a slow let out, then a beautiful smooth triger squeeze. That can jumped. He jumped, and I thought he was about to drop the rifle, it surprised him so much. We high fived, and he was on it again. 3 cans, 7 shots, one happy little guy.

I didnt shoot any of my reloads, and didnt bother hitting the long line, we went right over to dairy queen, and got blizzards. It's not every day you can sit down and have a blizzard with a rifleman.

General Tomfoolery and Fuckery by torque - 2005-03-16 03:01:47
Today, I worked from home, and got quite a bit of stuff taken care of. Just a bunch of stuff that needed a bit of attention after having last week off. After the workin was done there was playin. I stalked around the woods behind the house, and found a nice spot to do a little shooting with the superquiet powderless colibris. I gave the pine cones hell, then dined on the last of the fine tropical trail mix. I didnt eat the whole 2 pounds myself, the buddy that was over doing my a/c install became a convert to the cause of the wal mart brand tropical trail mix.

I had intended to go grab some beers today, but completely forgot. On that sort of note, my favorite cuban sammich/paella place will begin serving liquor on thursday, so that might entice me to go have one. I didn't quit drinking, I just sort of forgot to do it. But seem to remember enjoying an occasional beer or tanqueray and tonic.

Much labor. by torque - 2005-03-14 04:17:56
Today, A fellow I know came over to help me get my heat pump turned up in the basement. There was much brazing, extending of pipes, wiring, more wiring, and a grand finale of a blown control transformer due to wierd directions in the book. One day, I shall have a new transformer, and there will be goodness. Much goodness.

On a high note, a pizza did appear midday, and it was consumed with haste.

Aghhh by torque - 2005-03-10 04:03:02
I picked up return to castle wolfenstein for xbox today, in the platinum bin for 15 bucks. I played halo2 all the way to the end a few times, and rock at halo. I'm suffering greatly without needlers, plasma rifles and plasma grenades right now. I'm hoping there will be more worthy stuff soon.

On a good note, I did grab a 2 pound bag of tropical trail mix, and it has lots of papaya, banana chips and dried cranberries in it. The down side is the almonds. Why do they have to screw everything up with almonds? They arent evil or anything, but they arent anywhere near as good as peanuts or cashews.

I grew tired of the fascination with laundry today, and did not play with either the washer or the dryer. Instead, I went to target to buy groceries, and wal-mart to just go find some cool stuff. There was a dearth of cool stuff in either. I did get more clp, but these days it's relegated to tasks like stopping swing sets from squeaking. Ever since I discovered kroil for cleaning and lubricating guns and other such worthy items. The swing set will get no kroil. It is freakin stealthy though.

Mr Mom Continued by torque - 2005-03-08 02:33:44
I'm almost diggin it. Work did call 3 times today. Actually 4, but 2 calls were about the same thing.

Worst thing that happened today was my 5 year old got some gum, chewed it, and disposed of it in the baby's hair. I dont know why. He is banished from gum.

Wife feels better. Kids are happy. I made lasagna and did all the laundry. I didnt have to go to any meetings, didnt have to negotiate with anyone on the expected level of work to be performed, and checked no contracts to determine if something was out of scope. I also did not have to try to get any stupid little pictures of routers to line up right in Visio. A fine monday indeed.

I did shoot some in the basement last night, but I need to make a better bullet trap. The one I have is containing everything, it just makes a really loud THWAP when the bullet hits. Which kind of defeats the purpose of shooting powderless 22's at night in the basement. I might try putting a bunch of styrofoam shipping peanuts in there, or maybe a bag of ice in the back. You should try shooting bags of crushed ice, as it keeps the bullet in the best shape after impact, and you can check groove engraving really easily. Even on flying ashtray type hollowpoints. The whole thing really has me wanting one of those CZ .22 LR uppers for my AR, so I can practice even more closely. They all seem to be flat-tops though, and I would really need something with a copy of my match rifle's iron sights. I'm going to see if they will take an A3 detachable carry handle, and maybe work towards that.

Hmmmm by torque - 2005-03-06 21:18:51
A blog thing. This is kind of cool.

I can ramble on. I do that anyway.

Most of it;s going to end up being about shooting stuff anyway. So if you dont like that sort of thing, just move along.

I did manage to get banned from democraticunderground again though. I made it up to 200 or so posts this time before getting busted. THis almost approaches my 300 post record.

I've been kind of halfheartedly posting at the asylum and hypertribe. There just needs to be a good place to go post about shooting stuff that isnt too serious. I'm down with supporting troops, and slightly interested in politics and all, but sometimes I just dig idle banter about windage and having to pee while working the pits, but the pit is sealed.

Mr. Mom by torque - 2005-03-06 21:13:30
Okay, this is day 3 of being the total Mr. Mom.

Kids like sugar, and shiny things. I need to find shiny things made out of sugar. They should make annoying noises too. I will be rich.

I have a giant list of accomplishments from the past few days. Exciting stuff. Like washing clothes. And making food. And cleaning dishes. The vacuum cleaner we have seems to be much better than the old one we had. I have not been shooting in 8 days. I'll probably snag a box of colibris (powderless 22 shells) and wander down to the basement with a .22 rifle this evening and make some sort of a little bullet trap. I shot one at a fence not to long ago, and it made a tiny dent and fell off, so I'm not too worried about the mayhem that could result. The firing pin made more noise than the shot, too, so this might be something to keep me in practice until I can once again roam free in my dirty Blazer without kids climbing around in the seat.

It should be a week before my wife feels good enough to take over again. I hope it's a little less. I'm getting a bit tired. I help out when I can, but didnt realize how generally time consuming all this stuff is.
